random #21: some ramps for my truck, almost

06-26-2009 11:06 AM by Gary Fixler | 7 comments »

To save my back the next time I luck into some huge logs, I found and purchased some Highland Ramparts brackets from Pep Boys, while there replacing my new truck’s dead battery. I’ve seen gardeners in the area loading and unloading rider lawnmowers and everything else with these things, so me and a log on a hand truck should be fine, despite my ample size. I also picked up the required 2×8s, each 8’ long. Unfortunately, measuring my truck’s unfolded tailgate he...

Another great pile of wood

03-03-2010 06:20 AM by Karson | 24 comments »

I made the trek to my wood supplier that gives us free scrap wood for our Toy Making outreach at the Mason Dixon Woodworkers. These toys are given to underprivledged children at Christmas time. We usually make about 1300 or so toys each year. This is my catch from the past week. Approx 200 BD ft of Honduras Mahogany. A lot of it is 10/4 square and 30 to 35” long. I can get all of the wood that is less than 36” long. I’m also going through his cuttoff bin and taking all Sa...

Tree IDs #8: The deadly Chinese Elm

03-25-2009 11:34 AM by Gary Fixler | 8 comments »

I was not expecting to ID this tree this way. At the end of my street is a tiny triangular park – by tiny, I mean maybe 0.2-0.3 acres – lined with what I’ve been guessing might be some kind of Eucalyptus. They’re tall, twisty, and have a peeling or splitting bark that reveals many multicolored blotches beneath. Today I learned what they are while looking up a Chinese elm my friend told me fell in the wind storm this week. It was 70 years old, and 50’ tall. I w...

found wood #3: When it rains... found some more logs ON MY BLOCK!

06-06-2009 12:36 PM by Gary Fixler | 2 comments »

My bones haven’t finished knitting back together, and the gum tree chunks are still in the bed, but on the way back from a fast food run tonight, I saw a log pile on the grass in front of the sidewalk, right on my block! I backed up in front of the driveway there, and loaded one very large trunk piece, and a bunch of other large branch pieces in right on top of the eucalyptus. I have a feeling they were out all day, and people picked through the little stuff for firewood, leaving the la...

After much hesitation I began puting some red on and decided to go with “Banner Red”. These are the first of a few coats but getting eager to get the red done and move on the the Upholstery. But after the fabric comes the decals and that is not in my bag of tricks.

Toy Construction #181: Mack truck Dump box 2

02-08-2018 12:31 AM by htl | 14 comments »

Took longer to get the dump box under control than I would have figured.. There’s just something about the shape of this dump box, love the look of it and have wanted to build it for a long time.

wood gloat of wood gloats

06-07-2012 01:17 AM by grizzman | 35 comments »

well fellow jocks today started out with a small wood gloat, i was blessed with the opportunity of going into some friends land where a tornado went through and salvage some wood that was there, one was a good size dog wood tree, and the other was a very large mimosa tree, i found out that mimosa is a beautiful wood, and i wanted to try working with it, so i took the larger trunks to my local sawyer and while there, i was given a rare opportunity , if you have been to a sawyers wood lot, well...

Toy Construction #179: Building a Mack Dump Truck?

02-04-2018 02:19 AM by htl | 5 comments »

Going to be using the plans for the Power Wagon [Mack] body and the bump box off one of Toys & Joys other trucks to make a mostly scratch built dump truck or maybe a wrecker, we’ll see where the wood wants to go when I get that far. Here’s what got done today. I needed to build the body first because I extended the cab and didn’t want to make the frame till I could see what was going to happen. The reason for the truck is to find a place for...

random #26: Burl Wood... "Nutz" :(

08-28-2009 08:42 AM by Gary Fixler | 8 comments »

This makes me laugh almost as much as it makes me cry. There’s a guy in my neighborhood with a big black truck parked on the street, and a pair of blue TruckNutz hanging below, which I must pass and notice every night when I drive home from work. I do admit that the sheer obnoxiousness of it does at least make me smile. But c’mon… beautiful wood burls? Is nothing sacred? I can only hope it’s injection-molded plastic wrapped in some kind of heat-shrink plastic print....
