Spirals #4: Assembling the jig

179 days ago by degoose | 30 comments »

Drill two holes in the fence . one a little larger.. to take 1/4 ” bolts . Mark these positions on the base and drill these holes to attach the fence to the base. One bolt is held with a nut and other with a Knob.[for adjustment in fine tuning the fence if necessary]. Drill two addition holes in the fence to accept 1/4 ” bolts for tightening the bridge clamps.[These holes got through the fence only] Refer to the photo. In his pic you may see that I inserted a bearing to serve as...

Making A Segmented Ring Without A Lathe / A Step by Step Tutorial

173 days ago by scrappy | 29 comments »

Well, I was asked to put together a blog on how I made my segmentd ring. Since I had to make a new one for myself, (first one too small) I thought I would go ahead and do a step by step picture tutorial. My first time ever doing something like this , so hope it comes out OK. Here goes; Wood Selection The first step in making the ring is deciding what woods to use. As we all know, the selection is quite large. One of the most important things is color, but the most important is hardne...

Ebonizing; Steel Wool and Vinegar

448 days ago by Allison | 28 comments »

A few months ago I had read an article about ebonizing wood with steel wool and vinegar. Awhile back I tried this and absolutely nothing happened. I never even tried again. Ebonizing is a stain of sorts I guess. I also have heard there are several ways of doing this. The reason the original article caught my eye was because I sure as hell don’t have the money to buy Ebony (wood), and I am forever wanting or needing dark/black wood for my projects and I do not like to use paint, to the ...

Shop Skills #4: Trusting Your Glue Joints

210 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 27 comments »

Many woodworkers lack confidence in their glue joints. The way to overcome this is by getting to know your products and materials. This is accomplished by experimenting and testing – particularly through destructive testing. I continually test my off-cuts from every project. This provides a form of quality control testing that is specific to each project. In this video I show a couple of the methods that I use to test my glue joints. Testing your joints to the point of wood fa...

Would factory rejected lumber count as recycled ?

501 days ago by DAN | 24 comments »

Hello A few years ago … maybe 6 or 7, I bought a box full of curly maple rejected guitar blank backs from Gibson in Nashville. Pieces are miss matched bookmatches, less then 3/8 thick, imperfect offcuts, 6 to 9 inches wide and about 18 inches long. Nice looking wood. Does this count as recyled ? I made sometihing I’d like to enter in the contest and wanted to ask first. Regards DAN

First attempt at hand-cut dovetails.

718 days ago by itsme_timd | 24 comments »

Now I see why they have machines to do this… I think I went into this overconfident in my abilities. How hard could it be to cut out a simple notch in a board??? Fairly hard when your attitude exceeds your ability. First, I bought a ‘fancier’ saw than the basic dovetail saw and it just made things worse. Then – when that didn’t work I broke out the coping saw for some nice wavy cuts, I got out the chisel and tore it up real good, and finally… the D...

Shop Skills #6: Holding and Routing Small Profile Mouldings

31 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 23 comments »

An Opportunity to Share While creating some detail mouldings for cabinet doors and drawers, I realized this would be a great opportunity to share how I handle these smaller pieces. Simple But Safe The methods that I use are very simple but create safe handling in a small production setting. My work table is not a traditional style woodworking bench, it has a solid laminate top without bench dog holes. I like the clean solid surface for the type of work that I do. This would...
