Transitional restores #4: Ohio Tool #122, What a Surprise

..Some times a restore comes along that just surprises the crap out of me. I’m a bit of an Ohio Tools buff. I’m not sure why, but I just started seeking out anything that has Ohio Tools stamped on it. This plane is no exception. I really believed it was beyond hope, but I could make out the Ohio Tools stamp. Transitional restores #2: Transitional restore the dw way.

A transitional bench plane can be a pleasure to use and they just look really cool. I’ve restored several, and each one tends to bring on a new challenge. Its a restore of wood and metal parts. Its not that hard to transform these into fine performing tools that are pleasing to the eye. First thing I typically do is take everything apart and place the parts in a container. Stanley #31 Transitional Plane Restoration

I came across an antique shop that had some old tools while on vacation. After strolling through I picked up a few planes and a saw vise (more to come on them later). Once I got home I decided I should start on the Stanley #31 first. I did some research to see exactly how old this plane was but couldn’t narrow it down as well as I would have liked to. I found that these planes were made between 1870-1943 and that my particular plane was made before 1915 because the frog was screwe...
