Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Well I went to the attic, actually surface area of the wood rack in the workshop and picked up a Bigleaf Maple Burl piece that I bought about 5 years ago on eBay. It came from the Pacific Northwest of the USA.
The piece had been water blasted to remove all of the bark off the outer edge of the burl and that leaves the spikes that are seen here. The block had been dipped in wax to minimize the drying of it.
I then went to the jointer (spiral Carbide blades) and cleaned up the edges.

Well here I go. For over 40 years I have smoked real heavy. 2- 4 packs a day. I have enphasima , asma and every thing else that goes with it. they said only 20% of my l;ungs left. and still smoking. Everyone has bneen trying to get me to stop smoking and over this past weekend My oldest son and I was out talking and he said that if I would stop smoking that he would stop also. Well this is Tuesday and I havent had a cigarette sence sunday evening. I started a new wood burning and I had to ...

About a year ago, my grandfather approached me about building a project with him in his shop. He had done this many times before, but the arrogant kid/teenager/college student never had the time. However, this time I jumped at the idea. I don’t know if it was the timing, the project, etc… but everything seemed to work out.
To understand the importance of this, you have to understand that my family is not one of those “close-knit” family units. Everybody is divorced (some a couple of times)...

Addison is already here as most of you already know ( and doing just fine). I’ve been really busy since we returned home from Addison arrival trying to get the crib finished up. I mentioned in one of my project post where I pictured a small hand plane that I made in my shop that I also make the irons and sharpening stones. I of course make the wood too, since I have a sawmill. Others showed interest in more details, so here they are. I did not know where to start. I am starting with a honing stone I “made”.

About 3 days before the bookcase challenge, I thought I’d try my luck at drawing a plan for this bookshelf.
I made this to fit in a corner of Barb’s little library in our basement.
I purchased some MDF plastic clad oak pattern shelf boards,
& I had some old stair balusters from a dilapidated house that was raised.

This is a wooden mold for gingerbread. It used to be in many cottages in our cantry. This one belonged to my great-grandmother and could be some hundret of years old. This was one of my very first carvings about threeyears ago.
