Post and Panel Construction System #1: What Is It?

1076 days ago by Pete Tevonian | 1 comment »

The Post and Panel System started with the desire to let my son build cool castles out of blocks. But I didn’t like that regular blocks fall down so easily. A little kid is going to have a hard time protecting his castle from barbarians, pets and siblings if the only things he can use are gravity and friction! So, unlike regular old blocks, the posts and panels in this set lock together. In minutes, without any instructions, your kids (or, be honest, you) can create complex and s...

Wood Art #4: Absolutely amazing, all-wood, construction vehicle toys

1249 days ago by Gary Fixler | 18 comments »

Anyone know Japanese? These are from YouTube user kinohaguruma, and they’re a young child’s dream come true. These are the kinds of things I always wanted to build out of wood growing up, and still do, but I also recognize the monumental effort required now. I chose 3 of them for the post here, each getting more complex and awesome, but there are more at the link above.

Toot, Toot, Tootorial #3: How to make a whistle on a router table

1105 days ago by Mary Anne | 38 comments »

Sorry about the delay in posting this tutorial of the series. I ran into some technical difficulties… which is another way of saying I sometimes have the attention span of a gnat and messed things up the first time around. Speaking of messing things up, I’ve injured my knee and have to stay off my feet for a few days. I am only on day two and already going crazy. All in all, it looks a good time for going on with this toot toot tootorial series. —...

Just finished preliminary assembly on 4 trebuchets to hand out for the Holidays to various kids in my life. These are patterned on the Hila Trebuchet, I’m having some trouble getting a consistent release, and I need to come up with some heavier ballasts, but it’s good to get ‘em off the workbench and to the next stage.

I am planning on giving purely woodworking based gifts for Christmas this year. For my son I have settled on the Construction Grade Toy projects from Wood Magazine. Both my Father and Father in Law are woodworkers, we have decided to split the set up amongst ourselves. I am taking the Crane and I am going to make a Modified Tractor Trailer into a Dump Truck. He will get one from each of us for Christmas and the other for his birthday. First up the Dump Truck. ps It is nice to get...

Mason Dixon Toy Making 2011

853 days ago by Karson | 14 comments »

I was chatting in a message to A1Jim and telling about the work that I did today and I got to thinking about something that has come up in making our toys. The newspaper article this year brought a new person who wanted to volunteer on helping make toys. But, he has a full time job and is not retired so he wanted to do it at his home in nights and weekends. So it was agreed that he would help up make our Lincoln Log Cabin toy. This requires about 5,000 ft of 3/4 square stock. We are mak...
