One of the stands that caught my eye at the Maleny Wood Expo was by Camphor Cottages.. they make Classic Timber Toys for kids of all ages…. The toys are made in northern New South Wales by Tom and Michelle and you can see them at Byron Bay Markets on the 1st Sunday of each month or Bangalow Markets on the 4th Sunday of each month
I made the trek to my wood supplier that gives us free scrap wood for our Toy Making outreach at the Mason Dixon Woodworkers. These toys are given to underprivledged children at Christmas time. We usually make about 1300 or so toys each year. This is my catch from the past week. Approx 200 BD ft of Honduras Mahogany. A lot of it is 10/4 square and 30 to 35” long. I can get all of the wood that is less than 36” long. I’m also going through his cuttoff bin and taking all Sa...
The Mason Dixon Woodworkers bought some popular lumber from a local sawmill operator. We picked up the wood and it was stored in our material storage building. As we started to use it I noticed that a lot of the boards had spalting but even stranger it had some mineral streaks that were pink. I’ve never seen pink before. We were cutting some of the planks today and this is a cut-off piece that I plan to use to make a few pen blanks. On one side of the board it seems tha...
Anyone know Japanese? These are from YouTube user kinohaguruma, and they’re a young child’s dream come true. These are the kinds of things I always wanted to build out of wood growing up, and still do, but I also recognize the monumental effort required now. I chose 3 of them for the post here, each getting more complex and awesome, but there are more at the link above.
Just finished preliminary assembly on 4 trebuchets to hand out for the Holidays to various kids in my life. These are patterned on the Hila Trebuchet, I’m having some trouble getting a consistent release, and I need to come up with some heavier ballasts, but it’s good to get ‘em off the workbench and to the next stage.
This year the members of SAW made over 1300 toys for the Salvation Army Toy drive.

Our toy making operation was published in the newspaper again. It seems that the article was published in Delaware Wave on December 17, 2008, Delaware Coast Press in December 18, 2008 and in the Daily Times in December 23, 2008 It is truly an honor to be a part of this group of dedicated workers who meet each Wed of the year to make toys for kids. They are distributed to different charities in the area for their distribution to the children of their client families. We make about 120...
Toymaker Amber Dusick aka woodmouse her wood shop in her garage in downtown LA. After the birth of her son, this one time farm girl from Wisconsin became nostalgic for the toys from her past: simple, natural toys that would inspire creativity and imaginative play, made from materials that wouldn’t stick around in a landfill for thousands of years. After years of silver smithing, throwing pottery and drawing with pen and ink, Amber finally found her medium in wood. Using sustainab...
Yesterday Dec 6, 2008 was our toy give away day for the Mason Dixon Woodworkers Club. These are the toys that we made in 2008. Approximately 1300 toys were made and given away. They were given to Charities in the area for them to give to their recipients. A local newspaper reporter Dan Shortridge and Photographer Gary Emeigh were present to record the day. I’ll post other pictures but here is a link to the Newspaper Article Click on the related articles to see the print article. ...
