A while ago someone requested a blog on the construction of my toys. I’ll start by warning you that writing composition is not one of my strong suits. Also I build everything from plans even if I have to draw my own. This project was actually started 6 months ago, then other higher priority projects or life got in the way. As far as making something and having it turned out like I envisioned it this rattle is the closest:
Red Oak and Poplar and filled with dried beans, 5.5 inches long and 3/4 of an inch in diameter at the handle. Finished with mineral oil.

My youngest daughter was very much into horses when she was at home. We had 14 Acres in New Jersey and probably had horses for around 15 years or so. After High School was over the horses disappeared and the horse barn became a lumber storeroom.
She got married and about 6 month ago her in-laws gave her some riding lessons as a birthday gift. The horse fever caught on again. This time she has a young daughter. For some reason girls and horses seem to go together.

I finally am at the end of this project. It took quite a bit longer then my initial thoughts, which was to just throw something together and call it a day. LOL. So a 5 hour project turned into 15 and I have to say that I’m glad that I took the leap. This gun turned into a cool little project and it requires a lot of different techniques. I’ve decided to spend some time on this shotgun. It was a tough decision, providing that I’m giving it away to a 6 year old. But the reason I decided to move forward is because #1 I don’t think there is a toy gun as detailed as this will be, #2 I enjoy carving and it’s a good experience, and #3 maybe people will see it and either order one, or maybe even ask me to carve their real rifle. I decided to update my old toy version of my ‘00 Ford Focus hatchback to more accurately reflect the typical look of its big brother these days. I’ve made a couple of trips for Eucalyptus that have looked very much like this, complete with long branches sticking out the window :)

The dry fit passed inspection from my quality inspector so it was time to move on to finishing.
I disassembled it to three major components and put on Minwax Dark Walnut Stain. Of course I did this on my finishing/pool table.
You can see the unstained head sitting on the table also. I installed the handle in the head with glue and two finish nails through the edge to hold it steady.

I used the Kreg screw system for most of the joinery on this project. This is my second major project (first one here) using this system and I have found them to be very strong. It’s also very quick to join pieces with this system which helped me do this project in only 4 days exclusive of some of the finishing. This was also my first time using the Kreg plugs which I’ve started a forum topic on here.

I started this project out with the SketchUp design so I printed full-size templates to make my pieces. My original idea was to use 1/4” hard board as a pattern for a pattern trimming bit. I cut out the hardboard on the scroll saw and then cleaned them up with my spindle sander.
I tried to use the pattern bit on a practice dog dish stand with some leftover wood and didn’t have good results. I think my pattern bit is probably not the hig...
