Swiss Trip #1: Tour of a lifetime

866 days ago by Roger Strautman | 14 comments »

I’m a part of this great website because I am a woodworker and enjoy new adventures into woodworking with my LJ friends but my passion is for woodcarving. I have been carving for about 14 years and have taken a couple of classes from Wayne Barton the world renowned chip carver. Wayne Barton not only gives classes but because he studied carving in Switzerland he also puts together a 12 day Swiss tour every year. The wife and I have been saving our money for the Swiss trip ever since my f...

Charles Rohlfs Oak Desk, Stickley Ellis Table & Iconic Crafts, Nelson Atkins Art Gallery Kansas City

Wow! I made it, I finally made it, and oh what a surprise to find a museum with Iconic Furniture pieces intermixed with a lot of European, Asian, Native American, Egyptian, and some strange Contemporary Stuff that someone else calls “art”. ————————- WARNING: If you are easily offended by my silly notions of what looks good and is well built, please don’t read any farther. I’m just giving my opinions, that is what ...

LJTV #1: Shop Tour

2200 days ago by scottb | 22 comments »

Our buddy Darryl says he has the Woodworking Dungeon – perhaps now he’ll agree that I really do… with spiders and miles of cobwebs barely overhead for a nice festive touch. One upshot to this contest was forcing myself to clean up the space a bit (Ignore all the dust and spiderwebs. I do). I also found 3 six-in-one screwdrivers that were slated to have their handles replaced with new new wooden ones… That puts versions 4-6 on the to do list, without spening any $$...

Hibbing High School (The Castle in the Wilderness)

167 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 28 comments »

Hi Lumberjocks! This is the High school that I got my first formal training in woodworking. This video shows the most popular features of the school. It’s too bad it doesn’t show the fabulous woodworking shops. They had every tool plus industrial sized machines. It didn’t only have woodworking, but Machine shop, Welding, blacksmith, sheet metal, electricity, foundry, Drafting, & Aeronautics. That’s about all I can think of now. I just thought of s...

MsDebbieP's Company Tours #5: OMS Tool Company

2105 days ago by MsDebbieP | 16 comments »

From Marine Surveying to inventing a woodworking tool: why of course, what else would one do? This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jim Lindsay, President of OMS Tool Company and inventor of the DowelMax. The HistoryI asked Jim how the transition to inventing took place and he shared a bit of history with me. In 1995, he was ten years away from retirement and not really looking forward to it. Then, one day as he was working in his shop, he had the idea for the soon-to-be “Do...

My Town Tour - Brezno, Slovakia

1746 days ago by Martin Sojka | 66 comments »

I’d like to invite you to a brief tour of Brezno – nice small town in the heart of Slovakia where I’m living now. Let’s see what Wikipedia has to say about Brezno’s history: “The place has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but the current town arose from an old Slovak settlement, next to which newly arrived German miners erected a typical square market in the early 13th century. The first written evidence of the town’s existence is dat...
