After a long week at work, I decided it was time to start the process of restoring my bench planes. I have been collecting them for a while with the intent of getting a good set of operational hand planes. I am hoping I will get a good set of usable planes at a reasonable cost.

I was very intruiged by Steve Latta’s DVD for Lie-Nielsen “Fundamentals of Inlay: Stringing, Line & Berry” and the associated line of inlay tools that they offer along with it. I learned (by way of the Villiage Carpenter) that Steve has been touching a longer course on inlay for quite some time, and used to advocate the manufacture of your own tools, in the style that Lie-Nielsen is now offering. Based on an article by James Thompson I found on OldToolsShop.com. I though I woud try using Citric Acid for rust removal. The article can be found at the following link.

So now we have to take a look at tools. There are LOTS and LOTS of tools to look at. But the three most important are the zoom, orbit and pan tools. It seems that their importance are in that order.
Again, I’ve definitely discovered that if you don’t have a mouse you better get one. You can do everything with your keyboard and cursor – but you’ll save yourself a whole bunch of aggravation by getting a good mouse.

I decided to make my own try square, in the spirit of the hand tool extravaganza I’ve been into lately. I saw an article by Adam Cherubini on making them, I think in popular woodworking. (If somebody has a link to the issue, let me know!) I don’t have the article handy, but the basis of it was pretty simple.
I grabbed some spare Sipo and some spare Maple that already happened to be an appropriate width, a hair over 1/4” and 3/4” respectively.
