My recent battle with the cheap electric chainsaw, and subsequent redesign of my 36” crosscut saw’s handle have seen several people recommending I rive my huge logs with a simple wedge and sledgehammer system. I’d seen it done before, but had always thought the splits were messy – not an issue if I’m just making some turning blanks. I also feared that such shock-treatment of the logs would lead to microcracks and extra checking later. I’m probably just bein...

“We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment”
-Jim Rohn
I thought I would spend the day continuing to work on my Krenov saw horses, since I didn’t have any new DVDs or books on woodworking. For those that stopped by hoping to see a rant about John Lively’s company The Taunton Press, you will be disappointed to know that I am too happy today to gripe about their inefficiency. Because Monday is a holiday, I won’t get them be...

Now I have a pair of tongs and a pair of spurtles right next to the stove. Why do I seem to be making my own tools in pairs?
At least I think I’ll get more use out of the tongs than the (so far unused) spurtles. At least they were educational when I was learning how to turn them!
I won’t stop at two tongs though. I have a pair of whisk style tongs with plastic handles that have broken. I should be able to epoxy the business end of the tool into a matching oak handle. The...

power… give me more power…
I’ve had this cordless dewalt set for several years, and in the last year It has been stored most of the time. I have 3 18v batteries that would rotate between the tools, so I would always have a fresh battery to swap with… until recently – all 3 batteries died, don’t hold a charge – and in the last week won’t even charge at all … AAARRRGGGGHHH….
so now I have a collection (9) of pretty yellow tools t...

About 10 or 11, I got my first “real” job. My grandfather had an auction house. All types of strange and wonderful objects passed through there. Lots of strange and wonderful people found their way their too. I was always on the end of a sofa or moving a box. I did a mans work…well kinda. I have pretty much stayed away from auctions most my life simply because I don’t need more junk. Today I made an exception. A local cabinet maker was “downsizing”. I was h...

Hello,
My name is Jeremy (firm cyber hand shake). This is my first blog entry for my account here at LumberJocks. Short intro. Please excuse my spelling. Spelling has been a struggle for me my whole life.A bit about my self. I was born in Marburg Germany, but have lived the larger part of my life on the west coast of the USA. I love anything I can do with my hands. Pottery, glass work, automotive work, carpentry, cooking, brewing beer… you get the idea. I love to learn and share. I a...

Zagreb has a huge flea market in the wastelands on the edge of town out by the garbage mountain !I love flea markets, and this one is one of the best. There is all sorts of new products, from clothes to tools and everything in between, along with a second hand car market plus a massive section of second hand goods. Literally everything can be found there. I get most of my router bits there (new) and I like to get old hand tools there also. There’s also many BBQ type food and drink estab...

Last night when I was just about ‘done’ with stuff at somewhere around 10pm, I was picking around this site. I noticed that many of you had maps on your home pages which showed exactly where you lived. I liked that feature very much, as it helped me learn more about each woodworker and the proximity of his or her location.
Nova Scotia always sounded so exotic to me when I lived near Chicago. I pictured icebergs floating with little penguins and polar bears lounging on them an...

I was digging through a box of woodworking magazines and books that I had stashed away for the past ten years and came across a copy of Harry J Hobbs 1935 booklet “Working With Tools.” This is a 90 page guide to building things with hand tools.
To buy all of the hand tools on the list of tools he suggests for a small shop and additional tools it would have cost you $33.75. Since the average yearly wage at that time was $1,600 a year, to set up a complete shop of hand tools it would cost ...
