Shop Tools #2: Work Sharp - The Wood Tool Sharpener Review

918 days ago by WayneC | 40 comments »

I have been looking for a sharpener for a while and came close to coughing up $250 for the Jet clone of the Tormak when the woodworking show was in town last month. I had also seen the Work Sharp on the web. Dan Like had seen one in action and given it his endorsement. There is a video of it on thier web site if your interested in seeing it in action. Wood Magazine has a review of it as well as a video of it in action. Two weeks ago when I was on my way home from the bay area I stopped ...

Shop Tools #10: DeWalt 925 Radial Arm Saw

769 days ago by WayneC | 26 comments »

I have been resisting buying a Radial Arm Saw (RAS) for at least the last year. I have a great Sliding Compound Miter Saw, Router, and Table Saw. The only operation that seemed to be quick with a RAS that I could not easily do with the tools I have is making cross cuts using a dado set. Last week Blake posted a project where he did a wonderful job restoring a 1959 DeWalt Radial Arm Saw. I really loved the job he did. Sunday afternoon I was browsing Craigslist and saw an ad for a saw si...

Handplane Restoration #20: Sliding down the slippery slope - Part 1

838 days ago by WayneC | 23 comments »

I started this blog to restore a set of Bailey style bench planes for use in my shop. The more I have worked with handplanes, the more diverse my interests have become. I have been interested in Plough Planes for a while after reading about them on Patrick's Blood and Gore site and on Alf's Cornish Workshop web site. Alf has a lot of historical information on her web site as well as a user’s guide that shows how to tune and use a combination plane. In addition to this, I read an e...

What saw to choose??? Delta Vs Ridgis Vs Craftsman #1: Delta model 36-655C 10" hybrid table saw w tennoing jig OR Ridgid R4511 Granit top

125 days ago by BeachedBones | 21 comments »

Well, the local Home Depot FINALLY has the Ridgid R4511 Granite top in stock! Woot! Now it comes down to a choice I’m stuck on. They also carry the Delta Hybrid 36-655C w tennoning jig. These saws are marked at the same regular price 899$ Both of these saws are really appealing to me, in fact I was getting myself ready to buy the Delta, since I could not get the Ridgid anywhere locally. Now I can… arrrgh, tuff choices now. I was also considering the Craftsman Hybrid for a littl...

Wondering how to make this Leap Day special? screwdriver #2: replacement

971 days ago by scottb | 21 comments »

Dear Sir, We are very sorry to hear that our first generation custom made six-in-one screwdriver did not live up to your screw driving expectations of being able to drive nearly as many screws as the Titanic made Trans-Atlantic voyages. We take our product design and customer service very seriously, and have sacked everyone involved with the first product line. At considerable time and expense we have completely retooled our product line and would like to offer you a replacement fro...

Handplane Restoration #22: Sliding down the slippery slope Philly style

798 days ago by WayneC | 17 comments »

I’m a firm beliver in supporting other LumberJocks when I can and I’ve been in the hunt for a good miter plane for a while. I was impressed with Phil's wooden miter planes and decided to order one. It actually arrived a couple of weeks ago, but with my work schedule I really have not had time to try it out. It is a wonderful plane. Well made. Phil made the blade as well as the plane. It was well tuned when it arrived. I basically set it on the bench, put the blade in,...

Handplane Restoration #23: Stanley Bedrock 603 Type 6

781 days ago by WayneC | 16 comments »

I really like the Stanley Bedrock style planes and on a whim bid on and won this plane last week. I will be replacing my current #3 with this plane in my bench plane set. If you have followed the blog, I set a goal of putting together a full set of Stanley bench planes. The set is now pretty much complete with a little tuning planned. For example, I would like to replace my Sargent #8 with a Stanley 8C or perhaps a Bedrock 608 and have been slowly looking for one. Also, I still need to r...
