The American Craftsman WorkShop #16: Sheet Goods Organizer

01-04-2010 10:09 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 22 comments »

Increased Efficiency Through Better Organization My shop environment is always shifting and evolving. The goal is to create an efficient space to work in. My shop is not large by business or commercial standards and many hobbyists enjoy a work space as large as mine. But large shop or small, as a business I have to focus on efficiency to make money. A Couple of Problems One of the biggest offenders for this disorderly disaster was storage for sheet goods. The goal is not to bec...

Design Thoughts on a Shaker Inspired Bench Video Re-edit

10-15-2009 06:47 AM by Todd A. Clippinger | 15 comments »

I am not attempting to milk this out, but I was very unsatisfied with my edit job on the first release so I worked it over again. This version is actually 9 seconds shorter but I have added a handful of still images for close-ups to show more detail. This gives added value to the video as it provides greater visual information. This video is not about the how-to for constructing the bench. It really is about the design and thought process for creating it. I cover many of the design ele...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #15: Reorganizing the Shop - Complete (this round)

10-12-2009 03:25 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 29 comments »

Grandkids And The Studio Furniture Movement The space-time continuum changes when you add the grandkids factor to the intended work progress equation, but that is OK. Rita and I had a couple of the grandsons for the weekend and they spent some time in the shop with me. I went out to the shop Saturday morning with the 2 boys in tow (ages 3 and 4) and thought that I would finish my organizational efforts in just a few hours – silly me. It took me all morning just to install the ceil...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #14: Reorganizing the Shop - Finishing Up

10-10-2009 06:12 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 10 comments »

Almost Done I only have a few things left on the list for this round of shop organization. I need to get the clamps hanging on the wall. At the moment they are just laying on the floor. Before this started they were standing, piled in a corner. It was difficult to access them or pull them out individually, but I cannot neglect them for one more day on the floor. This has been their temporary home while I finished the wall. I also need to hang the extension cords. I have a lot of ...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #13: Reorganizing the Shop Day 4

10-09-2009 01:44 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 13 comments »

Coming Down The Home Stretch Yesterday I finished the mud work where I removed the double doors. I also took the opportunity to patch the wall and ceiling where flying projectiles had left their impressions. I mounted a couple of hose reels that I bought several years ago. I had bought three originally and I mounted one but put the other two on the shelf. The first one broke and I tossed it during this round of organization. Now I have two but that is quite adequate for my shop. I us...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #11: Shop Reorganization - Day 2

10-07-2009 04:20 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 18 comments »

Getting Closer To Done I don’t think that a person is ever done with organizing the shop but I am getting close to done for this round of organization and resetting the shop. I finished my drywall repairs and painted the wall. I have 3 cans of old paint and all of them are marked “shop walls” but none of them match. My guess is that I did not have them labeled and at some point I opened them for identification, thought it looked like the shop wall color and marked it a...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #10: Reorganizing the Shop - Again!

10-06-2009 05:34 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 28 comments »

First Snow! Yesterday we woke up to the first snow of the season. We ended up officially receiving 4.6” but it has mostly melted off by this morning. Rita’s garden is looking pretty sad. You may be wondering, and the answer is “yes.” That is a genuine outhouse but the pit has been filled and it is used as a small gardening tool shed. Putting new shakes on the roof is on my honey-do list. On to the shop… I started working yesterday and I got on...

I Met LJ Member Dave Mitchell Tonight!

09-27-2009 06:19 AM by Todd A. Clippinger | 12 comments »

LJ member Dave Mitchell and his wife stopped by tonight. Dave, also known as Splinters, lives in the far northwestern corner of Montana in West Glacier. That is at the western gate of Glacier National Park. He and his wife are traveling to the midwest for a visit with family and they had to come right by my place in Billings, MT. Since I live just spittin’ distance off the freeway and the KOA is just down the street they decided to stop by. Dave is a real Montana kind of guy, a...

Shop Skills #5: Using Toner to Add or Change Color

09-13-2009 05:32 PM by Todd A. Clippinger | 35 comments »

Sorry for the False Start Guys… I had the privacy setting turned on when I posted to YouTube. (D’oh!) It’s Finally Here! Whew! It takes a lot of work to shoot a video, edit, and get it posted to the internet. I am still struggling with posting to the internet. My HD file sizes are too big to be accepted by BlipTv and YouTube, and once I get the size down to an acceptable limit, they lose quite a bit of quality. This is a bit frustrating and makes me sad to see al...

The American Craftsman Workshop Update Sept '09

09-09-2009 07:32 AM by Todd A. Clippinger | 23 comments »

I hope that everyone had a good finish to the summer by spending quality time with the family over the long Labor Day weekend. My wife, Rita, and I went kayaking with friends on the Madison and Yellowstone Rivers here in Montana and we covered 17 miles between the two trips. Bald eagles and other wildlife were abundant and the scenery was – well it’s Montana so it was beautiful! My apologies for not being very active this summer here at LJ and for the lack of providing real...
