Cutlist and Layout from Sketchup

514 days ago by daltxguy | 259 comments »

If you’re a fan of Sketchup for creating woodworking models, then the next obvious step is to use Sketchup to help you create cutlists and layouts. Sketchup plugin Cutlist 4.0 does just that. CutList 4.0 sketchup plugin helps you determine how much of each material you need to produce your design, taking into account nominal sized lumber with allowances for finishing to final size. Then it goes one further and lays out all of the pieces on boards or sheet good sizes of your choosing. Th...

Shop Safety #1: Regarding Karson's Kickback Survey

479 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 51 comments »

Hi All; I thought I would pass on HOW my kickback occurred, so everyone might keep this is mind when working in their shop, or anywhere someone might surprise you. First off, I do use a splitter for all through cuts, ALWAYS. (Obviously, cutting dodo’s and other cuts require it be removed) I had just started to rip a piece of wood, the board was almost to the splitter, but not quite. That’s when my wife busted in and startled me. I turned to see what happed behind me and m...

DON'T BE AN IDIOT, A WARNING

558 days ago by jockmike2 | 43 comments »

Do you all know that denatured alcohol burns, invisibly. I mean you can’t see it burn. Well a little blue flame maybe if you’re at the right angle. Well let me tell you from the beginning. I’m on quite a few meds from a broken back, diabeties and a few other ailments. Needless to say my wife does’nt even want me in my shop, let alone playing with power tools and chemicals. Most of the time I have my wits about me and do just fine until I get tired or in pain, thats whe...

Bowling Alley Workbench #6: There is more than 1 way to skin a cat - not so with bowling alley floors though - finally success

144 days ago by PurpLev | 37 comments »

Yes. Finally some light at the end of the tunnel, reverse thinking, and this project seems a bit more doable, and even not much trouble at all. Originally I tried to get the (2.5” hardened) nails out by using a cat’s paw and a hammer to pull each nail out of the 2.5 laminated hard-rock maple strips. I figured once I get all the nails out of the top strip, it’ll just free it from the lamination, and be nails free… one strip at a time, until I have them all cleared ou...

Thicknessing drum sander - shop made

643 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 37 comments »

I’ve had a fancy for a thicknessing sander but a 10-20 inch model costs the equivalent of $1000 US over here and there’s no way I can justify that sort of spending so I looked into making one of my own. There’s no shortage of help to be had on the world-wide-web. The links I found useful include: Dominic’s Woodshop Kawika Ukulele Sander Ray Lanham Woodcentral Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery Mother earth The Woodshop Art Herrick Luthiers’ Friend Nick’s drum S...

Work(shop) in Progress #8: New Table Saw: Low Profile Riving Knife for Ridgid R4511

231 days ago by PurpLev | 35 comments »

So among the few shotcuts that were made by providing the R4511 at the market price was the fact that it only came with a splitter+integrated blade guard but no additional low profile riving knives (for non through cuts). for the price this saw comes at – one can’t complain, and the fact is- it does have a riving knife mount system which is a good base to start with. solution: homemade riving knife made out of 1/8” plate of 6063 aluminum: EDIT: If I’d do this again,...

Shop Air Filtration #1: Media Filters

326 days ago by Bob42 | 35 comments »

I have been reading and commenting recently about shop air filtration and the concern for it. My decision to write this was to give the LJ’s community some facts about air filtration. Let me start with my knowledge base. I started my own air filtration business after my son was diagnosed with severe asthma at the age of 18 months. He is now 20 years old. My wife (an RN) and I immersed our selves into learning as mush as we could to make his breathing easier. We attended numerous seminar...
