Aimed at those new to saw sharpening, this instructional video is 2 1/4 hours long and covers the theory, the tools and the practice of sharpening western saws. You get to look over my shoulder as I sharpen four saws – two backsaws and two hand saws. I’ll explain the saw sharpening process and how you apply it to different scenarios. I really hope you find it useful. As to the production quality, I’ve done the best I could. I had to record it outside, so there is a bi...

This video was taken yesterday at the Brisbane Timber and Working with Wood Show…I decided that while many of my posts have previously included machinery and tools… this time it is…. Timber, timber and more timber...Timber, The whole timber, And nothing but the timber.
A mate was cutting down a Leopard tree [Caesalpinia ferrea] and asked if I wanted the wood… I had to think about this for a while because I am running out of room lol..Leopard trees have mottled shiny bark that someone thought looked like a leopard’s skin. This a graceful tree that lines many suburban streets and parks. They are perfect as a screen against the hot western sun, the light filtering though the leaves, highlighting their delicate shading.......And for those who wo...
Okay so it wasn’t 72 degrees, but it was close. Early March and a 60degree plus day in Rochester, NY, you want to be outside. SO I was. I squared up a round log.Video Log Overview I used my Logosol Timber Jig and a 2×6 rail I built (seen here). Close Up 1 Close Up 2 So now with my circular saw and a hand saw I plan on cutting this 8×8 down to 4×6’s and trying to make sawhorses. BTW: Can anyone name the movie this entry is quoting?
the principle is a wagon (brand Schiffer) which goes up and down on a rail and the bandsaw (brand Langer) is in a fixed position. For entire mill to operate like this you need 26 employees. Fully automatic mills are available but not recommendable because they get damaged and who is going to repair difficult electronics in the middle of the jungle in a country like Bolivia where there is no spare parts… operating bandsaw cutting ipe boards – 1 operating bandsaw cutting ipe boar...
hello, I am Harry Montana and this is my first blog that I write here, the following is the production of brazilian redwood (also called massaranduba) cutting in the hardwool mill where I work. What I wanted to show is that the massaraduba ‘bleeds’ latex while it is being cut brazilian redwood logs ready to be cut here the brazilian redwood logs are being cut here you can see the white substance coming out which is latex almost final stage of production, cutting the co...
MORE wood you say… but of course… can’t have too much wood… After turning my first pen, I became interested in pen blanks… went to see Trevor… he had told me that they were cutting some New Guinea Rosewood BURL… Also picked up some Huon Pine, Rose She-Oak, Dorrel [native Olive], Camphor, Tiger Myrtle and some Gutta Percha.. Went down to one of my favourite wholesale timber merchants… I had heard that there was a new guy there…...
I picked up another box of 20 exotic wood turning blanks from Rockler. It’s been on a big sale for a long while now, and I had free shipping going, too. I have an idea for possibly turning it into some saleable items, and running the numbers, it was a very good deal. One of the woods it includes, of which I have now 4 1.5”×1.5”×12” pieces is African Blackwood. The tree, – Dalbergia melanoxylon, found primarily in Tanzania and Mozambique, though native to, and ...
Not being able to cut up local wildwoods has been a real missing piece of my woodworking puzzle. Just recently I found a nearby Bandsawmill and now I’m like a kid at Christmas cadging local woods from my local area and having them sawn. All of the wood I have found and cut is deadfall and windfall. This includes a 30” diameter 6 foot section of Pecan from a neighbors field. The tree was blown over last spring and I cut the upper parts for my wood stove and barbecue smoker. Wh...
