dust stuff #8: check this one out

04-23-2012 07:33 PM by JoeyG | 17 comments »

As I sit here and wait for my walnut burl to arrive from UPS. ( My first internet order of lumber, I am a bit nervous.) I thought I would share a quick picture of my new box. I normally don’t share my projects when they are incomplete unless I am doing a blog or need a little advice on how to finish up a design. This time it is simply because I am so excited about it. This is my largest box to date. There is ruler in the picture to show scale. It is sized using the golden rectan...

My Maloof Rocker #1: Prepping the Front Legs to

06-25-2011 06:40 PM by Tim Dorcas | 6 comments »

I recently took a Maloof Rocker class with Randy Child and Charles Neil. They were both kind enough to let me video the learning sections of the class. In this video, Randy discusses the requirements for prepping the front legs to integrate with the seat. I have lots of video but most of it has high levels of noise. If there is interest given these restraints, I will post a few more. As for the class itself, I really learned quite a bit about shaping wood which is the largest require...

Blanket Chest #1: Design Choice and Lumber Purchase (pictures)

05-21-2011 04:48 AM by HokieMojo | 5 comments »

Well, this will be my 6th active blog. I’m spreading myself a bit thin. My wife and I learned that we are are having another baby in the near future. It doesn’t need to be done immediately (good since I’ll be busy), it can be used to hold items for the baby, when she is older it can hold toys, and finally it can g...

02-05-2011 06:57 AM by David Craig | 12 comments »

“If you are not willing to be bad at something, you will never be good at anything” – Me That is what I tell my sons when they express outrage at the lack of instant gratification when setting down to try and learn the guitar or try something in sports. Life isn’t a video game and it takes a little time to develop any skill. Something I need to remind myself from time to time. This project hit a couple snags. I completed the top portion of the top - But I ...

Scroll Saw Projects #1: Tree of Life Tiger Maple and Walnut Scroll Box

01-26-2011 04:12 AM by David Craig | 8 comments »

And now for something completely different - I have turned a few vessels and decided to try something a little different. I bought a Dewalt Scroll Saw awhile back but have not made heavy use of it. I bought a book by Diane Thompson on Scroll Saw Box making about a year ago. There was a design in there entitled The Tree of Life and thought I would give it a go. I had some 1/4 inch Walnut and some thicker (approx 1 1/2”) Tiger Maple that I purchased from Raven’s Farm that I decid...

Trying out the router table and bit from Charles Neil

05-05-2010 11:31 PM by sandhill | 4 comments »

I scored some tiger maple, cherry and white oak yesterday and just had to try out the new router table with my new router bit I (Thanks Charles for the bit and Jim for the lead) The tiger was a piece I deemed not worth risking damage but as it turned out it came out great. I ran it over the jointer and it took about 4 passes to get the profile to the desired point.
