What happens when you try to make a pen and the top half explodes on the lathe, so you try to make another pen and bottom half breaks when you are “trimming the barrel”...This:
I have one of the best wives on the planet.
The snow man is finally done. He measures nearly 16” tall and 8 1/2” wide at his widest.
Thanks to the sharp eyes and friendly advice of my fellow LJ’ers I have updated the cutting diagram for the podium to make better use of the grain direction. I have also added another piece to the diagram, I figure I will double up the bottom “shelf”, where the caster are going to screw in from the bottom.
People at work have started to notice I do woodworking stuff at home (it could be I bring in every project when I finish it and set it on top of my cubicle wall…). Now it seems they need a podium for the meeting room and wanted to know if I would submit a proposal to build one. Here is the basic design: And I figured it out to be 2 sheets of plywood and some 1×4 trim. All told I have it at $179.12 for materials.
I’ve made a little more progress on the snowman (he’s a filler project for when I only have 20 or 30 minutes to work in the shop). His nose is a piece of a dowel that sharpened pencil sharpener and then I carved it down a bit more with a utility knife and then sanded it a bit (not TOO much, its a carrot after all). His 3 button’s are all pieces from the same dowel. I need to apply a little wood filler in one or two places, sand that smooth, then put on the f...
I got the snowman carcass and drawers all separated and the drawers cut up and formed back together. I also got the first round of sanding done on the snowman’s body. Predictably, I am planning to paint this white (with a black hat, black buttons and and orange nose). Next up is some sanding on the drawers, and cutting up a 1/4” dowel to make the 3 “buttons” to go down the front (2 of the buttons will be drawer pulls for the 2 bottom drawers).
A couple nights ago I was laying in bed thinking about a particularly nice pine glue up cut off I had sitting out in the shop. Every time I’ve gone out there recently, it catches my eye. I had a rare burst of creative inspiration and a thought came to me on what I could with it. My wife loves snow men, so this should be something she will like. I am planing to make 3 drawers, if I was braver I would cut the drawers out, tape them back in place, and turn it so that it w...
Well, it has been quite a while sense I posted, Christmas has come and gone as well as the whole winter. I was in the ranks of the unemployed for about 4 1/2 months at the end of last year, and spent a fair amount of that time taking care of my mother who diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in August. She ended her fight on April 14th, rest in peace mom. For my birthday my let me sign up for another woodworking class. This one was at McLaughlin Woods, which is I found is only about 3 miles...
I finished the kitchen cabinets on schedule and my brother and sister-in-law came up this weekend and attacked the project with gusto… First the sheet rock came down, and then most of the wall studs came out. Then the carpet and the kitchen floor had to be cut back to the subfloor level so cabinets could sit down where they needed to be. Once the final dimensions were figured out, the end post to support the overhead beam went in place (the beam was pocket screwed i...
