Hello to all and welcome to the first installment of Intarsia Basics. Before we can start cutting we need to select the wood we want to use and get our pattern ready.
Wood Choices:
I prefer to start with stock that is one inch thick because that gives you a lot of depth that you can work with. Welcome back and again sorry for taking so long to get this post out. After my hand healed I was really backed up on some other projects. I’m almost caught up and will post some of those projects on my page in the next couple of days.
When we left off we had all the sanding done and are ready for staining and finishing. I’m making two of these frogs, one that will need staining and one out of exotic wood so everyone can participate in this project. We will go over staining next.

Recently I had a need to build a new table saw base for my saw. Rather than just building a simple replacement base, I opted to build one with lots of storage potential. This new base measures 6 feet long by 2 feet wide, which gave me good reason to move over to the new shop building. This week I decided to rebuild my tablesaws extension wing/router table. This time I removed the factory metal wing along with my old router table extension and built a new wing using the MDF and famica from last weeks build. This new extension wing combos as a router table as well as it has a pull out support arm that allows me to support my material as i cross cut long boards or sheets goods no matter if I am using a sled or not, because the support arm is adjustable. I offered a couple weeks ago to try to do a tutorial on how to make a coffee cup like this.
The above is teak, it’s composed of 15 separate pieces. You build it like you would a barrel, just smaller.
So, to start you need to find something that will work well as an interior sleeve, I’m partial to stainless so I keep my eyes peeled for any candidates when I’m out and about. I’ve found these work wonderfully and are cheap.

Hey everyone,
I was asked by a few of you from my blog “How to find legal burls” “once I get them how do I cut the burls”?
Well I just made a short vidio on how I cut to the burl in the context of a bowl or hollow form blank.
