Thanks to the creativity and hard work of Karson, Mark and Michael we are starting our first unique Woodworking Challenge! Karson sent the proposal to Glen Huey, Senior Editor of Popular Woodworking and asked him for their support in this challenge. Glen whole heartily agreed.
Karson's proposal was to use the cover project from February 2007 issue #160 of Popular Woodworking - Thorsen House Side Table - as our challenge. When we have the Summer and Winter Awards everyone builds their o...

Martin has asked for blogs re: the big table challenge and I figured that since I am tracking the process of this “creation” I might as well follow the journey with some photos.
I re-read the rules to see if I was breaking any rules by posting the progress but I didn’t see anything that indicated that this was a “no-no” .. so here is the progress!
Photo 1: The Beginning The table will be mostly willow of course (Hey, Chip – here’s my addiction o...

So is anyone up for a timed SketchUp challenge?
A friend of mine offered this although I’ve modified it slightly.
Draw a simple table like the one in the image above. Make it 24” tall (I forgot to add that to the drawing) and sized as shown. Use components or don’t. No need for dimensions, joinery or materials. Post an image of your drawing and the time it took you to draw it. The deadline is Wednesday, Feb 18 at 5:00 pm CST.
Edited to add: Don’t use any p...

So after much research and debates, I have finally charged the card, and 2 days later the delivery arrived with the new saw in the box (I opted to have it delivered from the store as opposed to pick it up myself – at 450lbs, I simply wouldn’t be able to unload it myself) Delivery from HD was swift and smooth, positive and friendly guy stop at my place saturday morning, and helped me position the box in my garage – I couldn’t be happier (took 5 minutes, 4.5 of those was...

OK, so yeah – another blog about a router table, but since I’m going to make one , might as well document it while I go, maybe someone can benefit from this.
I’ve had a Rockler router table top + plate + fence which I got when I bought my router (Bosch 2 1/4hp). It had the misfurtune of being on the floor when my basement was flooded a couple of years ago, so that top was ruined. I since have been planning to replace it with a shop-built version, and make a full enclosed ...

The last couple of days, I’ve been working on the tabletop. I mortised out the breadboards, & cut the tenons.
I kind of fell for the cloud lift theme, so I incorporated into the top. You might want to call this a sideways cloud lift.
I decided to try something from the latest issue of Fine Woodworking, They call it draw bored pegging on the breadboards. This is something I’ve never tried before, so we’ll see what happens.
Check out my latest Video, hope you ...

In order to continue challenging us to develop our creativity and woodworking skills let me present another challenge to you, with the support of Popular Woodworking.
Google SketchUp is a powerful yet easy-to-learn 3D software tool that is currently being discussed in each woodworking forum or group. Yes, it can save you costs during the designing phase and it will boost the creativity of your finished pieces when you master it.
And what’s the best ...

Hi all;
I always mention my buddy Bruce, and here’s a post dedicated to him, (even though he’s still alive) knock on wood.
He has no experience in wood carving, other to set a hinge or something.
When we were building the Philadelphia Pie Crust Table, he would work on parts like turning the post, laying out the pattern for the top, as well as cutting it out and hollowing the middle of it with a router. The 1 inch thick board becomes about 5/8 inch in the middle are...

Popular Woodworking has announced the winner of the Thorsen Table Challenge.
Before we get to that, I want to congratulate all of the winners—everyone who took part in the challenge and enjoyed the process, the laughter, the teasing, and the inspiration that we have shared over the past three months.
I would again like to thank Karson and Obi for this great idea. It has really been a lot of fun and we have met many more LumberJocks because of it! Thank you.
And now for the ...
