Sawstop and Router Cabinet / Infeed Table / Outfeed Table Project

1363 days ago by zzzzdoc | 462 comments »

At the very start, let me give all the credit in the world to Tedth66, whose project this is totally based on, and who has been graciously providing guidance as I build this. This is a modification of his design, adding a few details, and making it work for my shop. I have a 2 car garage / workshop that is tremendously space challenged, so I need to be clever about every square inch. On top of that, I enjoy modifying designs and making them work custom for me. So when I saw Ted’s ...

French Cleat Wall Storage System

1698 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 28 comments »

A French cleat is as ingenious as it is simple. It involves securing a strip of wood with a 45 degree bevel to the wall, and then securing an opposing beveled strip on the back of a cabinet or anything you want to hang. Its incredibly strong and versatile. Its a great way to hang cabinetry and as you’ll see in this video, it can be used to make an awesome modular wall storage unit.

Virtual Designs in Sketchup #5: Rolling Wood Storage Rack

1133 days ago by rance | 7 comments »

I’ve seen several variations of these rolling wood storage units. Inspired by them, I came up with this one for a friend of mine: It incorporates storage for long lumber, sheet goods, and small turning blocks as well. About the only thing I might add would be dowel storage of some kind. Truth be told, I’d probably just put them in tubes and store them on one of the shelves. It is a typical A-Frame design with half lapped joints. For economy, most of the stick material is...

Shop Organization #8: Workbench Cabinet (Part 1)

2331 days ago by gizmodyne | 11 comments »

Time to modify the workbench. I built the bench a year ago. Currently it has a simple shelf for storage. The plan is to build a simple cabinet with drawers to store hand tools, possibly my routers, and other “stuff” Here is a pic of the plan from Matthew Teague’s Setting up Shop (same place I got the bench plan). The drawers are weird. The bottoms are glued and stapled up onto the box. The bottom then becomes the runners. —————&...

Planning the Makeover #2: SketchUp Plans - Sheet Goods & Cutoff Rack

1622 days ago by Jeison | 12 comments »

edit – I actually did this before the workbench, but since I’m adding it to this series after the fact, it winds up as #2. I designed this partly to learn more about using SketchUp, and partly because its something I’d like to make to keep organized and clean. After looking at what I usually keep on hand and the sizes of scraps I seem to accumulate, and combining some ideas from a few other mobile racks I’ve seen on LJs, I came up with this. Its 24” wide, by ...

"Why is This Car Parked in My Shop?" Turning My One Car Garage Into A Shop #1: Moving the Hand Tools In...Installing A French Cleat System

1651 days ago by Brad_Nailor | 11 comments »

So, I spent all summer building a barn, so I can move all the junk out of my garage, so I can buy a real cabinet saw, jointer, band saw, and drill press and have the room to leave them all reasonably set up so I don’t have to do the Harlem Shuffle every time I want to use a tool…(whew!) And wouldn’t you know it…the wife wants to park her car in the middle of my shop. More about that later…much later! So, I bought my Unisaw and built my out feed tableSo now I need...

Cheap, easy to make and incredibly strong shelving

329 days ago by mhfinefurniture | 4 comments »

Last year I embarked on project that included redoing the storage room in my shop and also building a gambrel style shed on my property. After completing this, I was looking at needing about 120 lineal feet of storage shelving for both. I didn’t want to go with a built in 2×4 constructed shelving unit as they are not adjustable, a pain to build/paint ( I have done it before) and more importantly I can’t take them with me if I ever move. I looked at the local borg and it would have bee...
