Plywood Storage Cart #1: Plywood/Lumber cart musings - or How I would like to clean my garage!

940 days ago by chopnhack | 6 comments »

Part of my problem, which I assume all woodworkers have is that there is no such thing as scrap wood….thus the piles of ply and lumber everywhere. This leads me to where I am now, musing over a design or two to aid in my quest for floor space and for that matter to just be able to see my floor! At this point I grow weary of looking at sketchup and would like your thoughts. Picture #1 – the overall design, partly borrowed from the generic A frame you have all seen around, wit...

Workshop #15: ShopQuest 2012

941 days ago by clieb91 | 0 comments »

Ok So I know I have been referring to a ShopQuest for the past 2 years now. Well guess what I am finally doing it, with the time I spent in the shop this year thanks to my blog I decided I needed to move some things around. So most of the month of February is going to be dedicated to reorganizing and rearranging my shop. I even got an early start. I like the workbench I have (it was left behind by the previous owner) but the way I had it situated took up to much space. As did my previously...

Workshop Update #4: New Lumber Storage Rack

954 days ago by bj383ss | 1 comment »

Well today I built another lumber storage rack. This one I put up in the far corner of the garage next to a larger rack I hung several years ago. In my quest to free up more floor space I wanted to eliminate this storage bin. I made for scaps that are too long to go under a bench but it just never worked for me. Here is the new rack in construction. It was made from scraps. Hung up in its new home Here it is loaded up with all the stuff from the other bin. Look at all that floor s...

Shop Improvements #1: Hardware Rack

1001 days ago by wolflrv | 5 comments »

In the process of organizing the shop I had definite need of hardware storage. I had an old dresser that I revamped and used it for the larger parts, but the small stuff was overwhelming. I had 5 generic boxes and bought 5 more plano 3700 boxes to sort everything into. Here’s a pic of the sorting process which took over 9hrs to finish…LOL! It was a long day! Next I built a rack to hold all 10 of the boxes. I used some surplus PT 1×2 stock that I had. Here’s a pi...

Virtual Designs in Sketchup #10: TS Blade Holder

1080 days ago by rance | 7 comments »

In pondering the best way to store my table saw blades, I came up with this design. I’m sure I’ve just borrowed bits & pieces from other designs and combined them here though. Isn’t that the way it always happens? :) Here’s the assembled box with a few of my favorite Red, Silver, and my new Blue blades: #1 My Design Criteria:- Allow quick access to any blade without too much moving of other blades to get to the one I was after.- Provide reasonable protection...

Saw Till #1: Designing the Till

1154 days ago by brianl | 2 comments »

As my hand-tool usage has grown, I have gradually expanded my collection of saws. I started with three (rip, crosscut, and back) and over time I’ve added other restored specialty saws until I have no place to put them all. At that point I realized I had to build a saw till. My workshop is in a shared basement of a multi-apartment building. While normally the other residents of my building are quite nice and respectfully don’t mess with my stuff (I don’t mess with their...

Virtual Designs in Sketchup #5: Rolling Wood Storage Rack

1177 days ago by rance | 7 comments »

I’ve seen several variations of these rolling wood storage units. Inspired by them, I came up with this one for a friend of mine: It incorporates storage for long lumber, sheet goods, and small turning blocks as well. About the only thing I might add would be dowel storage of some kind. Truth be told, I’d probably just put them in tubes and store them on one of the shelves. It is a typical A-Frame design with half lapped joints. For economy, most of the stick material is...
