01-08-2012 07:09 PM by gizmodyne | 4 comments »

Have not been here much in the last year or so. I got a new position at work which has taken up more time in a good way. I have actually built a bunch more of the kitchen cabinets which I will post later. I am finally building some removable sliding windows for the porch. I put some fixed windows in a few years ago, but it was long enough that I completely forgot how to do the job smoothly. So I am going to document it this time. In this blog: How to make the frames. Here are two of the...

Rustic Furniture

My wife and I often visit our families in the mountains of western North Carolina. We are planning on visiting next weekend and I spoke with my father today and he suggested that we go for a hike while up to look for Morel mushrooms and ramps (a type of wild leak). In the area of the Appalachian Mountains I grew up ramps are a tradition this time of year. As a young boy I remember hiking in the mountains in search of ramps to dig for family get-togethers. Ramps have such a strong flavor ...

09-04-2008 10:57 PM by Mark A. DeCou | 13 comments »

Another short Blog entry to post a concept sketch of a President Barak Obama Walking Cane. This cane design has been inspired by several historical examples of Election and Political Figure “Bust Top” collector walking canes. I have another design I’m working on the concept sketch for with an “Abraham Lincoln Bust Top” walking cane, and he’s deceased, and so that can not be determined as “politics”, just art. Ha. thanks for looking,Mark ...

Progression Photos on the "The Greatest Story Ever Told" Walking Cane Project

07-04-2008 02:52 PM by Mark A. DeCou | 12 comments »

Realizing that the story and photos of this walking cane project are decidedly Christian in content, if you are offended by such things, you should read another Blog. This project is a cane that I was commissioned to build, which tells the story of the Old Testament, the New Testament, and will be used to talk about the customer’s faith as he uses the symbols to tell the story. I hope that if you are offended by the content, that you will at least enjoy the woodworking process that is...

Planning "Steps" for a Carved Story Stick, "The Gospel" Commissioned Walking Cane

06-03-2008 04:08 PM by Mark A. DeCou | 9 comments »

My recent lumberjock postings of the walking cane work I have done recently has brought a lot of interest from folks wanting me to build them special, unique, elaborately detailed, walking canes and sticks. This new blog communicates the design process on one cane as I prepare to start the carving, and get approvals on the final design. The customer is a Youth Pastor, and needs to use a tall walking cane to support a bad knee. He and I have been designing this project for several weeks...
