Sawstop PCS Mobile base #1: Planning

51 days ago by pneufab | 2 comments »

I am going to try doing a Blog. Although this project is going to be a metal working project, it is for a wood working tool. :) I ordered my Sawstop 3HP PCS a few weeks ago and it will arrive next week (4/1). I am on vacation the following week so I plan to get it assembled and tuned up. I was planning to get the mobile base for free (the promo that they are currently running) but as I was doing some thinking, I decided against it and will get the dust collection instead, for two reason...

Frame Saw 1 #2: Brass Stock & Slack

113 days ago by FlyBoyJon | 0 comments »

Last weekend I had high hopes for this weekend. Well, for me the weekend continues through today, thank you instructor in-service. I didn’t get a chance to go over to my local purveyor of metals before Saturday so I had to wait until Monday. There seamed to be some confusion as the brass was priced like gold. Some nonsense about special order material didn’t qualify as a cut-off so rather than the $4/lb I expected it was $4.33/in, keep in mind this stock is 5/8 square, so the 2...

Frame Saw Build #6: stressed out... or not enough?

359 days ago by PurpLev | 16 comments »

With the blade cut and drilled to length, and the frame shaped and finished (BLO) it was time to add some tension to the frame to pull on the blade. I was toying with some ideas, and ended up getting an IKEA steel wire hanger as the tension control. It’s quite simple, and uses 2 threaded ends one left hand one right hand, both pulling on the wire: Putting tension on the blade using this method is not as easy I was hoping it would be and requires a pin to roate and thread those...

Cutting Metal in the Woodshop

429 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 20 comments »

As woodworkers we also need to cut metal once in a while. Also, having the ability to cut metal will allow us to create custom handles as I have on past projects. The question is how do we get a clean cut? Hacksaw? Reciprocating saw? Nope – portaband is the answer. The portaband is a powerful, smooth cutting portable bandsaw and a tool that I recommend for any custom woodworkding shop. Hope you enjoy! Your friend in the shop- Todd A. Mobile Workstation #2: Let's do the twist!

431 days ago by chopnhack | 1 comment »

Ok, so it’s much more fun to dance than to fix…. Apparently welding a frame should not be undertaken without proper support, or ahh… more experience. The frame had a twist to it across the 59.5” length! I cleared a section of the shop floor (miracle) got out my door installation level and found a fairly level area. I then proceeded to use some shims to adjust the floor until the it was perfectly level. Gotta give credit to the guys that screeded the floor some 50 y...

Mobile Workstation #1: The center of my shop renovation - from the ground up..

444 days ago by chopnhack | 6 comments »

The mobile workstation is in my opinion going to be the center of my workshop once its built. An integrated router table, table saw, downdraft table and ample storage in a ~ 5’ x 2’ area on wheels! Certainly not my idea, however, the layout will be done solely by me. I am open to all suggestions though, so please feel free to brainstorm here and let me know what has worked for you, what you would do differently if you had to build one again, etc. All comments and suggestions are w...

Putting a James Swan chisel back into service #1: Runup to the decision, assessing the situation, planning the resurrection

512 days ago by Lee Barker | 0 comments »

Since I got this tragic-looking tool at a giveaway (a junk store was moving, and the last day was free) and it had a bit of a name—James Swan tools are present and selling on the ‘bay—I decided the maximum benefit was to sell it. At the same time I put up a 2” Greenlee which I had. It wasn’t much, I thought. Well the Greenlee got all the attention, and indeed sold, but the Swan, all inch and three quarters of it, after two weeks, languished still. I considere...

Frame Saw Build #4: Stainless Steel Blade Clips

570 days ago by PurpLev | 12 comments »

It’s snowing here so Its out of the unheated shop and staying indoors – good time to make the blade clips. I chose to use stainless steel because I waned a material that won’t rust, be strong and capable of sustaining the blade tension, and I like the color (not a big fan of brass although I do like it as an accent in some cases). I ordered some 1/2” stainless steel rods from Speedymetals a while back for no real reason when I ordered some other material as it was o...
