Handplane Restoration #18: Stanley #78 Duplex filletster and rabbet plane

07-07-2007 10:31 PM by WayneC | 19 comments »

I’m straying a little from the bench planes today and documenting the restoration of a Stanley #78 Duplex Filletster and Rabbet Plane. I found this plane at the flea market last weekend and had been wanting to play with one. This one was in fairly good condition and was complete. Many of these planes that you find are missing parts. Things to look for are the depth stop, fence, and 3 blade spur. This plane can be used with the blade in two position one for normal use where you cu...

Stanley No. 4 & No. 5 - My first hand planes!

12-19-2011 06:59 AM by jboehle | 19 comments »

Picked these up at a nearby antique shop this weekend. The No. 5 Bailey is in pretty good shape. The No. 4 looks to have all the pieces, just needs some sweat & tears to make it pretty. The No. 5 Bailey: The No. 4:

Just some planes restored #12: Let's trick out a type 21 #4

07-03-2012 12:58 PM by Don W | 18 comments »

Ok, I know type 21 isn’t really a type, its actually the type after the last type, but then we know most types are a bit vague anyhow. I am always a little saddened by some statements I hear about the later Stanley planes. Although some of it is justified, most of it can be easily overcome and all can be fixed to make a great user plane. I think overlooking these later planes leaves a whole set of possibilities off the table. Some of the things I like about the later plane...

Handplane Restoration #23: Stanley Bedrock 603 Type 6

10-11-2007 02:32 AM by WayneC | 18 comments »

I really like the Stanley Bedrock style planes and on a whim bid on and won this plane last week. I will be replacing my current #3 with this plane in my bench plane set. If you have followed the blog, I set a goal of putting together a full set of Stanley bench planes. The set is now pretty much complete with a little tuning planned. For example, I would like to replace my Sargent #8 with a Stanley 8C or perhaps a Bedrock 608 and have been slowly looking for one. Also, I still need to r...

Shop Tools #14: New Plane - Bedrock 604 1/2

08-23-2013 05:09 PM by WayneC | 18 comments »

I’ve been wanting one of these for a while. An opportunity came up to pick this up on eBay and I made the jump. It’s main issue is that it has been drilled to hang on the wall. Not going to affect my ability to use it.

Car-boot sale treasures #3: One man's boat anchor... Stanley 55 find.

08-21-2011 04:51 PM by YorkshireStewart | 18 comments »

It’s not that we needed anything, or, indeed have room for much in our little house and workshop, but Mrs YS and I decided to have a walk around the local car boot sale / flea market this morning (for the exercise of course). Towards the end, I thought I’d escaped without buying, when I spotted a box of delights under a table (I spend most of my time on hands and knees at these events; it’s where they keep the rust). It was labelled £25 GBP & the vendor shouted ac...

Handplane Restoration #10: Stanley Bailey #3 Type 10 After

04-22-2007 06:17 PM by WayneC | 17 comments »

I finished up the restoration work on the #3 I have been working on. Things have been going slow due to work and family commitments. I thought I would get the blog entry done this morning before heading out to the woodworking show. I’m taking my daughter and her boyfriend. It should be a lot of fun. I also picked up a couple of items yesterday. My mother-in-law as been wanting a workbench for a while and I found one on craigslist yesterday. I love craigslist. The photos of the ...

Stanley Bench Plane Restoration UPDATE PDF ELECTROLYTIC RUST REMOVAL INSTRUCTION SHEET I have been a bit frustrated, as I can’t use my shop until the outside portion of our house reconstruction is complete which should be very soon. I have been using the down time to restore my Stanley bench plane. As soon as I get back in the shop, I have plans to make a video tool review so I am quite anxious to get going! My Stanley Bench Plane restoration project is near completion. As a remi...

Tools Anonymous #8: My three Stanleys

03-14-2013 04:21 PM by Sandra | 17 comments »

For better or worse, I’ve dipped my foot in the handtool pool. A few weeks ago, I purchased a lovely ‘tricked out’ Stanley #4 from Don W. as well as a Sweetheart #3 from an anonymous LJ. Both planes were auctioned off by LukieB for charity. While I was waiting for the planes to make it across the border, I picked up a Bailey Stanley #4 that looked like this: I wanted to take one apart and understand how it works before possibly ruining all the work that was al...

Restoring Hand Planes.. My methods #22: Stanley #72 Chamfer Plane... Completely Restored

02-10-2012 06:25 PM by Dan | 17 comments »

The Stanley #72 Chamfer plane was on my list of Stanley specialty planes that I wanted to own. I like this plane from both a collector and a user view point. What I mean by that is its fun to use and its also fun to look at on the shelf. This is the kind of plane in which I normally wouldn’t restore to a like new condition. Had this one been in good condition and had nice patina I would have just sharpened the iron and left the rest alone. However this #72 did not have nice patina an...
