How to dimension lumber with handtools #3: Reference Edge

09-13-2018 01:48 PM by LastingBuild | 0 comments »

Now that the reference face is established we move on to the reference edge. I first visualize the low and high spots and using my jack plane begin to bring down the high spots to meet the low spots. Once the edge is fairly flat, I check for flatness using my reference. Once flat, I turn my attention to assuring I have a 90 degree edge. Using a combination of the jack plane, jointers plane and smoothing plane I fine tune the edge until it is flat and square to the reference face. I mark the e...

How to dimension lumber with handtools #2: Reference Face

In this video, I establish the reference face. The reference face will determine all other dimensions of the board. I begin by placing the board cup side down for stability then I determine which direction of the grain. Once the board is positioned on the workbench I chamfer the opposing edge and begin to plane the board perpendicular to the grain along the length of the board. Handtool Basics #2: Bevel Edge Western Bench Chisel Shootout

02-20-2017 08:04 PM by WoodWorkLIFE | 3 comments »

Hey guys, In this video I compare several popular western bench chisel brands for: ease of sharpening, ergonomics, fit to tasks, and general fit and finish. I recently had the opportunity to have chisels from most of the major North American brands; everything from Harbor Freight, Irwin Marples, Stanley Sweetheart, Narex, Lie Nielsen, Veritas, even ALDI workzone. I put them all through there paces: ergonomics, sharpening, flattening, pairing, dovetails, mortise and tenons, even had cut dadoes. I put this video together to sort of sum up the experience, I sort of buried the lead in the video but here are the cliff notes. Veritas is on it̵...

Stanley gets delivered,.... Stanley gets returned.

10-13-2010 03:14 PM by Rick Boyett | 9 comments »

In my last posting, I said that I had ordered a new Stanley Sweetheart No 62 low angle jack plane. I was really looking forward to testing this and putting it into the regular rotation for my hand tools. Unfortunately the plane that was sent to me had issues right out of the box. Mostly cosmetic. Among the issues were: 1. Tote was loose and had a small crack.2. Paint was peeling off the base of the plane from under the tote.3. Paint pealed off the base and stuck to the cap.4. Fla...
