I’ve been thinking about what I do for a living and how I came to the level of finishing that I’m at. I’m what I would call a Modernist Finisher. Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Mark begins finishing this Slant Top Tiger Maple Desk by gently sanding and then begins to build up finish with layers of shellac (70:30 mix) with an HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) sprayer. Stay tuned for the next video in the series when we apply the final coats of finish, a...

This table took a lot of thought and really stretched my skills but now that I see the end I know I could do it again better and faster! Background: a customer came to me with the need for a huge extendable table he had some walnut lumber left over from the building of his house and wanted to know if I could take on the job!I said yes pending a design, he said “here’s the lumber and can you make it with a trestle base” After examining the size of the lumber and getting approximate ...

Well, I was considering what to put down in digital ink next and decided on a few different things.
I wanted to talk about the guns that I use first.I have six guns in use at any given time. Sometimes I have multiple projects all with unique colours.
I have one good quality gun. It’s a Devilbiss with a 1 litre cup. I also have a Lemmer and the other four are low quality Husky brand from Home Depot. All my guns are gravity fed and have 1/2 liter cup except for the Devilbiss.I...
