Well it finally wamed up enough around here to do some glue ups. I got my feet made and glued up, and attached them to the base. Then I routed the edge of the base, and made the transition moulding and glued that. Now a mother cold front has come through, and it looks like it might freeze tonight!! Good thing I got busy in the shop yesterday. I also went to Clark’s for some secondary lumber. It must have been my lucky day Saturday!! When I arrived at Clark’s, first thing ...
When it comes to building boats, I guess after 30 years of it I am a professional, but as a hobby woodworker I’m pretty new. Boatbuilding has given me lots of skills and abilities with tools but the scale of projects and the individual manual skills required to make small cabinets and art furniture are totally different. I am a real beginner at this stuff and am having a ball trying to learn everything at once. I retired five and a half years ago, following which my wife and I rebuilt o...
Having the bulk of pieces, cut and sanded, I elected to tape and pre finish most of the components. Finishing large projects is a huge challenge for me as I work in a 3 car garage and can not easily spray stuff. Since I was finishing many large panels, I decided to try applying the clear coat with a floor roller. Since I like their other products, I decided to use a Zinsser water based poly. It worked as well as brushing does, however, the coats go on thick and you need to watch the rol...
Well I got an HVLP sprayer from Harbor Freight. Kicking myself in the butt cause I havent gotten one sooner…several weeks of work, in several hours…sheesh… anyway here are some pics for you….. Right now I am spraying dewaxed shellac. I am trying to decide whether I will need to topcoat with poly or not…
With so many types of slides out there, there are different ways in which to install them. So here is another type of slide installation. I hope this is informative for everyone.
In this episode I go over the installation of the drawer slides. It is very important to remember that the width of you drawer box is the key to a successful slide installation.
As we continue on in our build we get to where we need to build the boxes for our drawers. I run through it and explain about setting up for the drawer slides.
So here is part two of this series on making these desks. I show you how I layout my sheet goods and yes I did solve my quandary of the pencil drawer grain. So I hope that this is entertaining and educational for all.
I know this is a little out of order but I needed to get started on these desks ahead of the garbage can containers. What is great about these desks is that we will be using different kinds of joinery. We’ll be laminating the legs, pocket hole joinery for the aprons and top. Plus there will be some edge banding happening too. You will also see how I build my drawer boxes and the material that I use for this in future episodes. Don’t forget to sign up for Huck’s (hucksdi...
