A non-plywood 4 drawer filing cabinet #1: The design

113 days ago by GCM | 0 comments »

Here is my attempt to build an affordable wooden 4 drawer filing cabinet. I rule out: Plwood, as it is way too expensive in Australia for anything but the most expensive style of furniture.MDF, I built a single draw prototype and, even when using frame construction, it was way too heavy.Melamine, may be a good choice but for this project I don’t think it looks good enough.Solid wood, as it is too expensive. My current choice is to go with premium (knot free) pine and pine panel...

Land of Nod #4: Odds, Ends, and the Finishing Begins!

167 days ago by byerbyer | 3 comments »

Well it’s been a couple weeks and the bitter cold snap has slowed the progress a bit.. but here’s the progress since we last met. I wrapped up the Toddler Rail joinery… voila! And surface prepped the walnut for finishing with some P220 on an ROS and P320 by hand. I was originally planning on just using my #4 and skipping the sanding (as much as possible) but I chickened out… I brought all the dowels home from Dad’s shop to my cozy (and down right CO...

324 days ago by Jim Earl | 5 comments »

A while ago I ask you to come up with new ideas for me to use my talent. One of you said to try nature, tree’s animals, then someone said Turkeys, OK I spent two days looking for the right picture. Then three days to come the stage I am now, I will try and go through each stage. and show how I come up t it. Stage one, looking for the right picture; Stage two was putting the pattern onto wood; and the third stage is doing the burning itself. I found a process which is, o...

333 days ago by Jim Earl | 3 comments »

Here is a couple that has asked me to burn this as a special momenta. Trying to get the right picture done as a pattern isn’t that easy and sometimes it turns out the first few times. this one took about six time of reprinting. I do go through a lot of in...

Mission Style Pedestal Table #5: Applying finish and completing the build

437 days ago by Douglas | 6 comments »

After a few weeks away due to travel and rainy weather, I was finally able to finish the table. The formula I was following was similar to what I used on an earlier folding step stool water based Transtint dye, sprayed shellac, and then as this was a table, Arm-R-Seal oil & urethane topcoat. I started with the dye, first wetting everything to raise grain, and then light sanding with 220 to knock down the stander uppers. I then mixed the Transtint Mission Brown dye power with distiller...
