Spindles #5: It's raining, but I'm still finishing

It’s been a great week for getting caught up on spindle production. The weather in North Seattle is gray and wet. That means that shop time won’t be that pleasant. That’s OK. I have a handful of orders to sand, polish, and finish. I’m looking for a good source for Birdseye Maple and Tulipwood. Later today, I’m meeting up with a new client and we’re going to spin some yarn together.

Building a Thos. Moser Design New Gloucester Rocking Chair #14: Evaluating the Prototype Top Crest

Ready to Cut Final Top Crest? I finished turning the 14 back spindles on the first rocking chair over the past three days. As I finished each spindle, I inserted it into the seat. Once I had the middle four spindles completed, I began inserting them into the top crest as well. The prototype top crest is only 1 1/2” tall. The final top crest is 2 5/8” tall and will be cut from some scraps of 12/4 cherry that I had saved since completing my pencil post bed almost 20 years ago...

What a week for new experiences and big projects. While my nights were spent toiling on the Thorsen Table… and trying new things, the day job had me wrapping my mind around several new things as well. The last basement dad and I refinished (sub contracting for Owens Corning) included perhaps the pinnacle of woodworking projects – redoing the stairs. Ripping off the 2×8 treads and replacing those with oak, adding oak risers, newel post, railing and 52 spindles. T...

I’m glad that my last rainy day terror didn’t dissuade me from my efforts. Thanks everyone for the upbeat words and encouragement… it actually made a big difference when I got out there again. This weekend I went to Rockler and saw this great deal on Bocote turning blanks. Picked up three 1×1x12 for $1/pc. BTW… has anyone else noticed that Bocote smells like pickles when worked?! WEIRD!
