I found what I perceive to be a great tool for the shop, an app for Android tablets, called Geometry Pad. Besides being free, there is an upgrade version for a small fee. What I found it useful for is assisting me in determining angles and lengths for project components. I just completed a creche or manger for my son, in my usual manner of working projects – without plans. This manger has a peaked roof in the middle, so plugging in the desired length of the front and the height of the p...
I’ve been searching for powerful CAD/CAM software that is affordable/free. I finally found it in Fusion 360 from Autodesk. They offer a full featured parametric 3D modeling software with integrated CAM. The integrated CAM makes the CAM parametric to the geometry as well. Currently, there is only a single product in the family which is free for personal/hobby use (yes legally). The full featured version is $300/year now. Come November 8, 2014, they will be offering a standard version ...
I want video editing software, under $100, Win7. What does this have to do with woodworking? Nothing directly but it’s becoming more common to video projects and builds. Please share your experience with any of the following software or software you feel I’ve overlooked that meet the requirements (under $100, Win7 compatible). Also looking for comments on Sony MS 12 vs. 13. Thanks. What I’ve tried: [updated] Premiere 2.0: good but outdated, no HD video, new version is ...
By popular demand this will be an interactive blog to show how 3D solid modeling can make the design and build process of woodworking, or almost any project, more fun and with better plans. The 3D modeling program is Creo Elements/Direct Modeling Express which is a FREE program from PTC (Parametric Technology Corporation) that I have been using since 2000 (then know as Solid Designer). If you want to join this adventure, go to the download site, check the PC requirements, download the a...
The cutting board designer is mostly finished now and I wanted to post a demo video and a link to the application which anyone can download and use for 7 days. I have sent temporary licenses to some people who volunteered for some beta testing. I have a few more licenses to give out if anyone is interested in some beta testing. If you’d like to give it a try the installer can be downloaded from: http://www.1024studios.com/CuttingBoardDesigner_Setup.exe Here’s the Video What wo...
Well . . . I jumped ship from Windows to Apple. After working with windows from 3.1 thru 7 I slid a Mac Pro in next to the Dell M90. It is a different, very different experience. I spent a lot of time at the Apple store, trying to do some of the kinds of things that i use a computer for. The people were very helpful with questions, and left me alone to “putz”. I finally took the plunge! I decided to try to totally stop thinking Windows and approach the Apple as if it was my...
To save costs and time is always welcome in any project, no matter how large is a woodworking plan. One of the tools that make the job easier, cleaner and cheaper is a nesting software. Some of the greatest advantages of a nesting software is to easily create optimal cutting plans, maximizing the material usage, avoiding calculation errors and anticipating with precision how many sheets or panels are necessary for the project, before actually buying them. The ability to try different layouts u...
The cutlist4.1.0pre link has been updated and anyone downloading now will now get v184.108.40.206 What’s new? Tilde (twiddle) ie ’~’ character has been restored to the cutlist window display. SU most commonly displays ’~’ on some measurements if it cannot display it accurately in the units you have selected. This might alert you that your part was not drawn correctly Tilde ( ’~’) now has been removed from the csv output ( cutlist csv and CutListPl...
