So a point was raised in my previous installment of this blog regarding tiling appearance of materials (once you assign your custom material to your model and scale it up you’d see the same material pattern repeat over and over again with distinct horizontal and vertical lines (the seams) that separate those repetitions.
This tutorial will show you how to eliminate those seams from your materials, and make it possible to seamlessly tile your material over larger areas. I will show yo...

so you wanted to use specific materials in your Sketchup project? exotic/local lumber? metals? leather? other?
I saw this subject raised in one of DaveR’s latest blogs, and it’s a fairly simple thing to do in Sketchup. You can use any material you so desire in sketchup, but first, we need to ‘make’ that material.
Creating new Materials in Sketchup (Using live materials as source)
1. get your material ‘source’ – this can be any photo – e...

Is there an easier way to select components/groups that are behind another geometry? or inside one? Is there a way to transfer a component from one group to another?
Yes there is. Welcome the Outliner window.
This tutorial refers to components in your model, but in this case, groups behave in the exact same manner.
If not yet visible, click ”Window → Outliner” to see this window in Sketchup.
The Outliner window shows you a list of all components and groups in your...

I see a lot of great Sketchup tutorials online (here and there), and while they do discuss different techniques, tools and what not – you really have to follow through from start to end, and go along a somewhat complex path to get the hang of things. one more thing – while on that road – one’s eyes are focused on the end result, and sometimes one can miss the fantastic little tips along the way.
This tutorial is one of many short – tip/tool specific – tu...

This is a model for the Woodpecker’s router table plate sized 9-1/4” x 11-3/4”. it is the same size for all their lift/non lift plates, also same size for the pinnacle plates, Jessem plates, and incra plates that are 9-1/4”x11-3/4” in size. the material width is 3/8” but can be modified to fit other materials.
(although it is advertised as 9-1/4”x11-3/4” is it slightly different – I think the margin of error is in the 1/1000 range. but ...

My mom is doing some amazing bead work. one time when I went with her to the beads store, I saw a small box/cabinet that the store used to store (no pun intended) the beads in, and thought it would make for a great way for my my to have all her beads organized – and I can make it.
After completing my handtool box (at least the general construction of if) it made me think that I can scale it down and use the same ‘general design idea’ for the beads box. plus some additions...

Ok—as I learned on the garbage can holder, I think I need a bit more planning on my next project. I’ve in the past at least drawn out some sketches and worked from that . . . which is what I did to a certain degree on the trash holder but I didn’t flesh out all the details until I was in (over my head) on the project. Norm Abram I’m not.
So on to the next thing which will be some overhead cabinets for in the garage. I’ve always wanted something above the wo...

I just completed the art print bin being built for The Clearwater Gallery in Sisters, Oregon. This was a commissioned piece to hold shrink-wrapped art prints in the gallery. The owners felt that a wooden print bin would fit the character of the gallery better than a commercial steel bin. Music to this woodworker’s ears!
Completed Print Bin
The design was worked out with SketchUp and finalized with a mock-up built with pine and MDF using a Kreg Jig and pocket screw joinery. The ...
