I was doing tapered legs with the follow me tool. It was quick to do tapers and chamfers like that but a light bulb went on in my head a couple minutes ago. With auto fold, tapered legs can be done in a single step as you draw the legs without extra work.
First: draw the leg down from the table to the point where the taper should start.
Second: draw a rectangle on the bottom of the leg that is the size and in the location of the finished tapered leg.
EDIT Then just pull it (oop...

I have found that two dimensions are especially helpful in designing arches; the radius of the arch and the length of the boards that make up the arch. If you do a search on ‘Woodworking Formulas’ with the added keywords Spreadsheets, Arches, and such, you will hit on numerous sites that either have formulas like the one below, or java script calculators on their webpage, or even spreadsheets free to download. One of the best I’ve found was written by Paul Huntington, an a...

So here’s the plan. I watched the Wall Hung Console episode of the New Yankee Workshop and my wife really liked the table. She thinks it would look great in the front hall. I thought it would be a good use of the walnut lumber my in-laws gave me, so now I’m finally getting started.
I took as many notes as I could from watching the episode and then plugged the dimensions in to SketchUp. I had to improvise some more of the dimensions since Norm didn’t mention all of the...

Sketchup File
Well the boss has tasked me with a different project than the bedroom. Last year we put laminate flooring down in the dining room and our office in preparation for putting builtins in the office. Nothing has been mentioned of them lately, until I started designing the bedroom furniture.
Originally we were going to use kraftmaid cabinets to do the rooms, and I had a pretty nice setup…
But I wasnt really happy with all my options and things we had to do ‘s...

I would like some critique on my design so far. This is going to be the base unit of my cabinet design for an entire wall unit. My initial design goal with this is just to get the drawer height set and comfortable with that. I have tried to add the faceframe elements, but am having trouble deciding on a method to attack that. I am probably over thinking it.
This is the initial unit layout for the Wall. Like I said above I am working on the base units for now, which...

Wednesday night I opened Sketchup I had downloaded along time ago. I forgot how awsome this program is. I made a vow to myself that I am going to learn this program inside and out. I still can not believe it is free. I am happy to spread the word on how easy this program is. When I opened it up Wednesday, my plans were to just mess around alittle. But when I was finished, (an hour later) I had a 3D model of the display stand I plan to build for the Artistry in Wood show in November. Once...

My son has asked me to build an artist’s drawing horse for him so I put together this Sketchup (SU) model to work out the details.
For those who are not familiar with a drawing horse (as I was not), the artist sits on the horse facing the upright. The artist’s easel is placed in one of the groves near the upright and then leaned against the upright for support.
Naturally, I will post pictures of the completed horse when it’s done.
Basic versions of my Sketc...

I came home with an amazing piece of figured maple from Global Wood Source (an impulse buy) when I bought the stock for my Jellyfish Table.
I have been playing around with Sketchup to figure out how to use it and I came up with this design. Brian was asking me about it so I thought I would post it. Let me know what you think. I have some 8/4 Walnut that I can use for the legs.
I plan to incorporate wedged tenons that show off the curve through the table top. Also I will resaw the 2̶...

There was a printer stand in the latest Wood magazine I received, and it inspired me to design one for our ink jet printer. I wanted it to match the existing furniture, which is a maple laminated particle board:
So, over to Sketchup where I draw some designs and once I was happy I added the joinery:
It’s all 1/2” material except for the drawer bottom. The drawer just slides in the opening with no hardware. I’m debating on whether to make it a...

so After setting on the last design (see previous post in this series) I went out to disassemble the bowling alley laminated top – the purpose was to remove all the nails, so that I can drill the dog holes, and also laminate it in a double stack to give me a 4” top on the perimeter (5” in from the edges – for clamping purposes, and leg attachments).
This idea turned to be disastrous. The nails are hardened steel, and twisted making the job of pulling them outridicul...
