New shop under construction #3: Electrical and Plumbing are almost done. And look, a birthday surprise!

277 days ago by Loogie | 13 comments »

The outside of the shop is almost done all that’s left is to put the shutters and crown moulding on the front window and put the gutters on. The overhead doors won’t be installed until the drywall and paint are complete. The electricians have been working at a good pace and the rough-in is all completed. The plumbing and electrical inspections should be today. My 40th birthday is coming up soon. My shop has gone so far over budget that I informed my wife a month or so ag...

Rambling #2: Workshop Eviction Notice (what to do?)

284 days ago by MtnManMEP | 32 comments »

Today at lunch, my wife informed me that she would LIKE my shop to be moved out of our garage and into the barn at our cabin, 116 miles away from our house. Given that I have to live in town for my teenage boys to attend high school and me to conduct work, this puts somewhat of a damper on my future woodworking. Now to be fair, this is not a demand but an extremely strong like, which I suppose is really like a demand without an ultimatum. What a conundrum. Here are the options I see I ...

Workshop #2: A little Safer

289 days ago by clieb91 | 6 comments »

Ok, So a little while back I posted a question about air filters and building one. Since then thanks to some Christmas money and a clearance at HD I actually purchased a Rigid Air Filter. I finally got it mounted this past week after few modification to the mounting concept. It seems the prefab floor joist they used to build this house are not what people think of when they tell you to mount it using the floor joists. So I added a little insulation to the ceiling and strapped the unit up. It...

Shop, Tools and Jigs #1: Croaker's Shop

313 days ago by Croakermea | 2 comments »

My shop sits in the third bay of our garage. I spread out into the middle bay when I need more room. When snow is in the forecast, the John Deere tractor with a plow blade has to squeeze in also (it’s there now). The table saw was a Christmas present and required some reorganization to make it fit, not to mention running the 220 power. The table saw, and the three cabinets visible in the pictures are all on wheels so that I can set things up quickly. My main work surface is the rolli...

Boy in the shop

322 days ago by johnjoiner | 10 comments »

The boy (10 years) and I descended into the shop last night to begin work on his pinewood derby car. With really close supervision I let him cut a straight part of the car on the band saw. But I was really happy that he got excited about using some planes and spokeshaves. On a scrap he tried out my woody smoother, block plane, and old #7. He thought it was very cool to peel the shavings off the board. Then it got even better when he went to town using a spokeshave to smooth the band sa...

Finally, My Dream Shop #11: AND THERE WAS LIGHT

366 days ago by Calgirl | 12 comments »

Well, I have three flood lights (but no bulbs yet) and one two-tube flourescent. Finally I have electricity! I have found that if I start working out there at about 10 in the morning, by 2 in the afternoon, I have to take a break to rest my back. Then after supper, I’m ready to get back to work. So far I have made a “scooter” to help me get all the heavy stuff out there. I’m going to tackle the drill press and maybe the lathe tonight. How glorious it will be to see...
