Photography #1: A Photography Studio In The Shop

695 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 24 comments »

The final act… Buffing the final coat of finish is the moment of birth for a project. After that it is carefully wrapped and delivered to start its’ life with family, friend, or client. One part of the woodworking process that most of us don’t figure in is the photography. I can tell you from experience that this a very important part of furniture making. It is not an option if you are planning on doing woodworking and furniture as a business, be it full or part time....

Inlay Tools #1: Introduction and Radius Cutter

141 days ago by Jon3 | 1 comment »

I was very intruiged by Steve Latta’s DVD for Lie-Nielsen “Fundamentals of Inlay: Stringing, Line & Berry” and the associated line of inlay tools that they offer along with it. I learned (by way of the Villiage Carpenter) that Steve has been touching a longer course on inlay for quite some time, and used to advocate the manufacture of your own tools, in the style that Lie-Nielsen is now offering. When looking at those offerings, I did think that several of them could...

Sketchup Models of Shop Furniture for a Small Shop #1: Mobile Shelves, Expandable Assembly Table and Lumber & Sheet Goods Cart

204 days ago by Jack Barnhill | 9 comments »

I have a small shop, about 200SF. It’s not as small as it once was, about 90SF, and it’s not as big as what I hope to have some day, about 600SF. To keep from climbing over things and make it easier to move things around to accomdate the operation of the moment, I thought I would adopt the “everything on wheels” strategy and double up what tools I could in single cabinets. So, to make sure that I had the right designs and that everything would fit in the shop and ...

Shop Organization #2: Wall Slat Organizers

383 days ago by SteveKorz | 17 comments »

OK. Let me start by saying that my shop is a disaster. More like a DIE-saster. You walk in and it’s much like a bad natual disaster, or war zone- and it’s actually gotten dangerous. I’ve lived out of those bucket buddies for years, and quite frankly, I just have never quite been able to get organized. I like to do things with a certain amount of frugality... recycling everything I can and not buying new stuff. If I have it, and can use it, and it works, I’m OK ...

New shop under construction #1: Groundbreaking to framing

672 days ago by Loogie | 17 comments »

After years of building my projects in basements, I’m finally building my own shop. This building will be a three level shop building (including the attic). The main (middle) level will be my woodshop and the basement will be my tractor garage/shed/auto shop. The project is far behind schedule and way over budget, but aren’t they all? The foundation is 25’ wide by 30’ deep giving me just under 750 sq/ft of woodshop. It’s never enough, but it would be very hard to...

"Workshop" tour

919 days ago by Bob Babcock | 21 comments »

Oops..posted this in projects by mistake….here it is in blogs. Last minute…no editing…..not that you wouldn’t be able to tell. OK…I figured that I would make you all feel good by comparison. My shop “workshopette” my wife calls it, is about as small as you can go and still call it a shop. I do manage to build some fun stuff though. The morris chair is underway and a stand up paddleboard paddle for my brother is going to start soon.

The American Craftsman WorkShop #9: New Shop Lighting

70 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 30 comments »

Bright Light! Bright Light! Over the last couple of days I added lights to brighten the shop. Shop Light Envy After seeing the lights in Les Hasting's shop I was motivated to install more lights in my own. There is nothing like shop envy to motivate a guy. The Original Lighting The original lighting situation in my shop was poor and inadequate. I had three 4’x4’ units with 6 bulbs over the assembly and finish area. There was only one of these 4’x4’ l...

Sketchup Models of Shop Furniture for a Small Shop #3: Bench Top Carving Bench

120 days ago by Jack Barnhill | 15 comments »

Edited 8/21/09: A couple of years ago I took an intro class on wood carving. The school had on hand some carving benches for the students to use but, naturally, I had to make my own design. Below is the design that I came up with. It was small enough for me to lug to class and large enough to handle most of the carving projects that I anticipate doing. It also allowed me the flexibility to accommodate various sizes of work and be able to reposition them without unscrewing and re-screwing...

Edited 8/21/09 – The drill press cabinet is the latest in my SU models for laying out my shop. This is the same cabinet as seen on my project page. New Shop #1: Sketchup of Shop Layout

283 days ago by Devin | 19 comments »

Hi everyone, well, after almost 4 years of continuously fine tuning my crawlspace shop, with no access larger than 30ish inches, I’m moving into a home with a basement. You know what this means, more room for my shop! I’m going from roughly 90 square feet (seriously, it’s that small), some of which is well under 6 feet tall (I’m 6’1”) to somewhere in the area of 240 square feet. Next stop, two car garage…but lets not get ahead of ourselves. For th...
