The final act…
Buffing the final coat of finish is the moment of birth for a project. After that it is carefully wrapped and delivered to start its’ life with family, friend, or client.
One part of the woodworking process that most of us don’t figure in is the photography. I can tell you from experience that this a very important part of furniture making. It is not an option if you are planning on doing woodworking and furniture as a business, be it full or part time....

Oops..posted this in projects by mistake….here it is in blogs.
Last minute…no editing…..not that you wouldn’t be able to tell.
OK…I figured that I would make you all feel good by comparison. My shop “workshopette” my wife calls it, is about as small as you can go and still call it a shop. I do manage to build some fun stuff though. The morris chair is underway and a stand up paddleboard paddle for my brother is going to start soon.

As I mentioned in my “Addicted to Turning” post, I planned to replace my midi lathe with a full size… I mean a full, full size lathe. And here it is: a Powermatic 3520B. And after working out the electrical and building a storage cabinet, I am now, finally back in business. The cabinet is supported by two 2×4’s, which the Powermatic’s legs are designed to accept. Having the storage supported by the legs also adds weight to dampen vibration
Here is ...

Hello fellow Lumber Jocks! I’m starting a little blog series on my work-in-progress DIY lathe. In short, I want to build a lathe to turn a few pens, without spending ~$60 some on specifically pen turning materials and ~$200 on a lathe.
So, I want to try turning. I’ve always considered myself a handyman-esque person, and I had that urge to build! The tipping point was when I found a few blogs such as AfriGadget, StreetUse and Future Perfect. Their owners travel a lot, and they notice ingenu...

The shop is now somewhat operational. I moved all of the power tools in. I’ve finally finished the baseboards and window casing. The baseboards are 1×6 pine with a chamfer on the top edge and the casings are 1×4 pine. I pre-finished the baseboards with poly but I’ll finish the casing in place because I also have to do the windows. An HVL system sure would have been handy there! I made the casing design myself but modeled it after traditional craftsman style casing. The n...

After years of building my projects in basements, I’m finally building my own shop. This building will be a three level shop building (including the attic). The main (middle) level will be my woodshop and the basement will be my tractor garage/shed/auto shop. The project is far behind schedule and way over budget, but aren’t they all? The foundation is 25’ wide by 30’ deep giving me just under 750 sq/ft of woodshop. It’s never enough, but it would be very hard to...

I just posted my first pen on my project list, and I mentioned “setting up my turning station.” Here’s the steps I go through, just for everyone’s amusement. As you recall, my shop is quite small – to use my table saw I have to roll it into the driveway. Everything is stacked up on everything else when I’m not using it.
The first picture shows my workbench in its normal state of being a storage unit. The big blocky thing leaning up against it on the left ...

We cross the pond to Broadstone, Dorset, UK, and the shop of Phillip Edwards. Deb is again heartened by the presence of a fire-extinguisher, great organization and good lighting. I am completely agog in the presence of Phil’s collection of wooden-bodied and moulding planes designed and built with his own hands (in addition to the one received from the hands of Krenov). Phil is no stranger to Photoshop himself, and has a justly famous website:http://www.philsville.co.uk/
The cognoscen...
