New Grizzly Tools

125 days ago by Greg Wurst | 10 comments »

Well, the bike is gone and the tools are here: I’ll be posting review on some of them here shortly. I spent most of the day in the garage playing with the new tools, and I’m very pleased. The only thing I haven’t used much is the inflatable drum sander, but that’s more for the wife than for me.

The Workshop: My Pursuit of a Functioning Workspace #1: Floor Plan and Tool Placement

138 days ago by Hyperhutch | 2 comments »

Right now I am trying to turn my work room (the garage) into a well organized, flow conscious workshop. I have been focusing on turning, but my first love is furniture design and making. I finally got some more machinery, and careful planning is a necessity. Up to now I have been using movable tables (that is, 2’x2’ pieces of OSB). I pile them up with all my turning tools and accessories, and nothing has a proper place. Right now everything is strewn about haphazard, and...

Inlay Tools #1: Introduction and Radius Cutter

144 days ago by Jon3 | 1 comment »

I was very intruiged by Steve Latta’s DVD for Lie-Nielsen “Fundamentals of Inlay: Stringing, Line & Berry” and the associated line of inlay tools that they offer along with it. I learned (by way of the Villiage Carpenter) that Steve has been touching a longer course on inlay for quite some time, and used to advocate the manufacture of your own tools, in the style that Lie-Nielsen is now offering. When looking at those offerings, I did think that several of them could...

The Slowest Farm Shop #4: The slowest summer ever? But there are projects...

145 days ago by Will Mego | 4 comments »

So like many here, this summer has been one of hardship, and little work, and lots of stress. But as outlined earlier, that’s why this blog is titled the way it is. This spring didn’t see as many trees fall as I figured would, so not as much work there. One old box elder did take a plunge…right into the fork of a large mulberry tree, splitting it about 10 ft….but still 10ft off the ground….and over a fence right into the neighbor’s garden…so that w...

New table saw!!!

158 days ago by ryno101 | 2 comments »

So after much debate, discussions of the pros/cons of the new granite topped Ridgid R4511, going back and forth, research, research, research… I finally settled on the saw I wanted (in theory… I hadn’t seen it yet in person!). I decided that the Craftsman 22124 was the right saw for me. It fit my shop, and came with a biesmeyer fence, which was really what cinched it for me. That fence is a $350 upgrade to any other stock fence… and it’s the gold standard th...

In and out of the shop #1: Kane Carving

167 days ago by JTRid43 | 3 comments »

Hello all. I am back…. Well…. Sort of. Okay, here’s the story. I finally got the chance to get back into the shop and start some projects for the farmers market. I was finishing up some built in shelves for a customer when my back went out. OH YES! It went way out. 3 ruptured disk L-3 L-4 and L-5. Stenosis of the L-5 S-1 vertebra with the disk at that same spot blown out are compressing the nerves of my left leg. Sciatic nerve for those of you who may not know is the main ne...

WHAT'S UP? "While I'm out in my Shop". #10: I had to make some parquet tiles yesterday.

184 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 9 comments »

I misjudged the amount of tiles I had, so I manufactured some more yesterday. I guess I miscounted the bundles I had made up. I couldn’t find any to buy, so I made some. I made about 60 more tiles.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~This is the area I have left to do in one corner of the main shop area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Here’s some views of the tiles I made. I used some Black Ash instead of Oak, bu...
