Ms Debbie P's 2007 Shop Tour and Inspection #11: Wednesday Special — Tribute Tour of Karson's Shop

430 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 14 comments »

This week it’s a repeat visit to Karson's shop. You may remember that Debbie visited Karson's long ago in the early forum version of the tour, exhibiting her mountain goat-like scaling abilities while inspecting Karson’s incredible collection of lumber. This tour is a recognition of Karson’s contributions to Lumberjocks. Yes, Karson was one of the pioneer members of LJs, with nearly 500 days of membership logged. Here he is at the beginning with our founder and several of...

Teaching our youth

463 days ago by Jeff | 14 comments »

I wanted to talk to everyone about teaching, as a profession. I am sure that with the talent that I have seen already up to this point that surly there must be a few teachers in the Lj. I recently have become a teacher in high school, teaching my profession, basically Emergency Medicine. I have been an EMT for way to long (15 years) but found that working in the field for 5 years or more I am able to teach what I do through the ROP (regional occupational program). I guess there are two ...

New shop under construction #3: Electrical and Plumbing are almost done. And look, a birthday surprise!

277 days ago by Loogie | 13 comments »

The outside of the shop is almost done all that’s left is to put the shutters and crown moulding on the front window and put the gutters on. The overhead doors won’t be installed until the drywall and paint are complete. The electricians have been working at a good pace and the rough-in is all completed. The plumbing and electrical inspections should be today. My 40th birthday is coming up soon. My shop has gone so far over budget that I informed my wife a month or so ag...

Turning #2: New mistri....... uh...... addition to the shop

121 days ago by Brian Havens | 12 comments »

As I mentioned in my “Addicted to Turning” post, I planned to replace my midi lathe with a full size… I mean a full, full size lathe. And here it is: a Powermatic 3520B. And after working out the electrical and building a storage cabinet, I am now, finally back in business. The cabinet is supported by two 2×4’s, which the Powermatic’s legs are designed to accept. Having the storage supported by the legs also adds weight to dampen vibration Here is ...

Favorite Shop Organizers

235 days ago by SteveKorz | 12 comments »

Hi All… All of our shops have to be at least a little organized for any type of efficient production, not to mention the safety reasons that also follow in this category. I’m beginning to get my shop organized, and I’m looking for some ideas. Any kind of storage, carts, benches, containers, ideas, etc, would help… pictures or links to plans if you have them would be GREAT! Also, please consider posting links to past threads here about shop organizing if you’...

Finally, My Dream Shop #11: AND THERE WAS LIGHT

366 days ago by Calgirl | 12 comments »

Well, I have three flood lights (but no bulbs yet) and one two-tube flourescent. Finally I have electricity! I have found that if I start working out there at about 10 in the morning, by 2 in the afternoon, I have to take a break to rest my back. Then after supper, I’m ready to get back to work. So far I have made a “scooter” to help me get all the heavy stuff out there. I’m going to tackle the drill press and maybe the lathe tonight. How glorious it will be to see...
