I have a small shop, about 200SF. It’s not as small as it once was, about 90SF, and it’s not as big as what I hope to have some day, about 600SF. To keep from climbing over things and make it easier to move things around to accomdate the operation of the moment, I thought I would adopt the “everything on wheels” strategy and double up what tools I could in single cabinets.

When I read about challenge 04 in Popular Woodworking Newsletter my first thought was to give it a try. The next thought was to design something that didn’t look like a box. Then I remembered that I had turned a square book case 45 degrees and put it into a corner. From there I took inspiration from other project I have built. About two weeks ago Hopdevil posted a question to the forum about shelving he had seen in the Martha Stewart Magazine. It is called birds beak shelving.Well thank you Hopdevil, a gun went off in my head. As part of the revamp of the closet in our loft that collapsed a few moths ago, I built this jig to ensure all the holes for the shelf pins would line up and I (hopefully) won’t have any wobbly shelves. It was inspired by a jig sold by one of the well-known woodworking retailers. I couldn’t see buying one when I had all the necessary stuff sitting around (short of a special bit). In hind sight, the time spent might justify the cost. What can I say? I like building jigs.

This is a bit old now, as I built these starting in late March this year, but I’m expanding them a bit now, and wanted to post some updates on that. In my last video I showed you all the renovation of the old shop space, during that renovation, I made some recess cavities in one wall of the shop. In this video I walk you through the steps of making the recess shelf unit to go into those cavities. These recess shelves are not just for the shop, they can be used in the home as well! Add some glass shelves and you have a nice knick-knack display shelf, or use them around the home for any organizing needs.

So, in response to my previous post – I’m only working on the right side of the closet design and I only have 6 shelves at the moment instead of 7.
The wood I ended up getting was “Whitewood” which seems to be some kind of spruce or pine. It’s pretty light and soft. This is a recap of a project I did almost 2 years ago, but wanted to post it online and just got around to it now.
My Wife and I have a room in our basement that was partially finished by the previous owners of our home. I got the last 2 of the 5 sections built last week, sans the corrugated roofing. Here’s how I did it, at warp speed:
