Shop Tools #2: Work Sharp - The Wood Tool Sharpener Review

917 days ago by WayneC | 40 comments »

I have been looking for a sharpener for a while and came close to coughing up $250 for the Jet clone of the Tormak when the woodworking show was in town last month. I had also seen the Work Sharp on the web. Dan Like had seen one in action and given it his endorsement. There is a video of it on thier web site if your interested in seeing it in action. Wood Magazine has a review of it as well as a video of it in action. Two weeks ago when I was on my way home from the bay area I stopped ...

Tools #2: Veritas Mk.II Sharpening System Quick Review - VIDEO

912 days ago by mot | 13 comments »

Hi Folks, As promised, a quick tour of the Veritas Mk.II Sharpening System. In the video I seem to use back bevel and micro bevel interchangeably. This is a mistake and is due to doing these videos at 1am when I should be ”sawing logs,” in bed. However, here it is…

Shop Skills #2: Card Scrapers the Video!

335 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 52 comments »

It’s Finally Here! I have completed my first feature woodworking video. This video shows how I sharpen my card scrapers. It is a simple process and I kept the instruction simple with some close-up video action. I hope this post goes smooth, it has taken me all day to figure out how to finish up the video and 3 attempts to get it online. So this is a pretty big moment. I can work on polished video later but I have to start somewhere. I hope that this video on sharpening ca...

My Sharpening Station Copyright 2-11-2007 Karson Morrison

1021 days ago by Karson | 30 comments »

I’ve noticed some Blogs and questions about sharpening chisels and I thought I give you my experiences and what I’ve designed. I’m getting ready to teach a sharpening workshop for the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers club and I was working on my setup and techniques. I own the Tormek Sharpening System , the Makita Sharpening System . I’ve used The Scary Sharp System and I build a modified Scary Sharp setup using cast iron plates and silicon carbide granules on the coarser grits and diamond paste...

Techniques & Methods #1: Scary Sharp Method

529 days ago by PurpLev | 16 comments »

so just like every other woodworker at one point (what’s up with the other every other woodworkers is beyond me…) I was researching and learning about ways to sharpen my chisels, planes, and other blade tools in the shop. Since I am the weekend warrior at this point, and I do not need to resharpen my tools THAT often, nor THAT much, I figure that I can do without any expensive powertools (there are several of those on the market) to sharpen blades and I dont really have the spa...

Tools I make (sharpening stones, planes and irons) #2: Just a little wood, I have 2 loves wood and steel (wood most).

622 days ago by Daren Nelson | 12 comments »

I have not followed up on my plane making series as I promised, sorry. This is an addition, but not very much wood related either. I hope no one feels it is too off subject. Another jock (zebrano) posted a knife handle and sheath he made as a project, it prompted me to blog this knife. EDIT: THERE IS PLANE IRON INFO ADDED AFTER THE KNIFE I made this for my brother. He is left handed and there is actually a right-left handed sushi knife. He lives on a boat (50’ Hatteras motor yacht...

Small Workbench #4: The Top

699 days ago by Mike Lingenfelter | 9 comments »

For the top I wanted something that could stand up to getting wet. I thought I would use a laminate countertop (Formica). At our Home Depot you can get small 2’ x 4’ pieces of laminate. The selection isn’t that large, but I think I found something that worked for me. I glued and screwed to pieces of ¾” plywood together. Then I used some scrap pieces of oak to trim off the edges. I then applied some contact adhesive to the top and the laminate and put them together. I put small ...

Shop Skills #3: Sharpening Card Scrapers - The Lost Scene...

334 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 28 comments »

Forgive My Insensitivity… A public Thank You is in order before I go any further. I had some great support from two individuals that are a part of LumberJocks. I relied heavily on Dave Pruett for “on call” support to figure out how to edit / process / and post my video. I need to thank Marc Spagnuolo as well. I did not continually call him like Dave, but his advice and pointers were taken to heart and helped me out as well. As with my woodworking, my achievement...

worksharp tool sharpener - first impressions segment 2

754 days ago by Bob #2 | 19 comments »

I realized that I needed decent way to hang on to the correct angle on the worksharp. I began looking for a tool holder to use with it but alas, there were none available and Lee Valley’s holder would not work with this sharpener. Here’s what I came up with: I bought an extra ($10.00) hand held jig rather than make one as time is not my best friend. Next I stripped the roller assembly off the holder. I got a suitable piece of UHMW and marked it out for milling on the r...

Simple Joinery Series #2: Get Your Chisels Wicked Shaaaahrp!

245 days ago by Thomas MacDonald | 11 comments »

Tommy’s last video hinted that one of the secrets to fine joinery is sharp chisels . . . or as we say in Boston “wicked shaaaahrp”. This video demystifies the secrets of chisel sharpening and clearly shows that a sharp chisel is more important than brand. While there are endless ways to sharpen tools, Tommy has found a process that works best for him. Bottom line . . . do your research, experiment, and find what works best for you . . . get those chisels sharp and start cutting dovetails! ...
