I have been looking for a sharpener for a while and came close to coughing up $250 for the Jet clone of the Tormak when the woodworking show was in town last month. I had also seen the Work Sharp on the web. Dan Like had seen one in action and given it his endorsement. There is a video of it on thier web site if your interested in seeing it in action. Wood Magazine has a review of it as well as a video of it in action.

It’s Finally Here!
I have completed my first feature woodworking video. This video shows how I sharpen my card scrapers.
It is a simple process and I kept the instruction simple with some close-up video action.
I hope this post goes smooth, it has taken me all day to figure out how to finish up the video and 3 attempts to get it online. So this is a pretty big moment.
I can work on polished video later but I have to start somewhere.

I’ve noticed some Blogs and questions about sharpening chisels and I thought I give you my experiences and what I’ve designed.
I’m getting ready to teach a sharpening workshop for the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers club and I was working on my setup and techniques.

so just like every other woodworker at one point (what’s up with the other every other woodworkers is beyond me…) I was researching and learning about ways to sharpen my chisels, planes, and other blade tools in the shop.
Since I am the weekend warrior at this point, and I do not need to resharpen my tools THAT often, nor THAT much, I figure that I can do without any expensive powertools (there are several of those on the market) to sharpen blades and I dont really have the spa...

I have not followed up on my plane making series as I promised, sorry. This is an addition, but not very much wood related either. I hope no one feels it is too off subject. Another jock (zebrano) posted a knife handle and sheath he made as a project, it prompted me to blog this knife.

For the top I wanted something that could stand up to getting wet. I thought I would use a laminate countertop (Formica). At our Home Depot you can get small 2’ x 4’ pieces of laminate. The selection isn’t that large, but I think I found something that worked for me. I glued and screwed to pieces of ¾” plywood together. Then I used some scrap pieces of oak to trim off the edges. I then applied some contact adhesive to the top and the laminate and put them together.

Forgive My Insensitivity…
A public Thank You is in order before I go any further. I had some great support from two individuals that are a part of LumberJocks.
I relied heavily on Dave Pruett for “on call” support to figure out how to edit / process / and post my video.
I need to thank Marc Spagnuolo as well. I did not continually call him like Dave, but his advice and pointers were taken to heart and helped me out as well.

I realized that I needed decent way to hang on to the correct angle on the worksharp. I began looking for a tool holder to use with it but alas, there were none available and Lee Valley’s holder would not work with this sharpener.
Here’s what I came up with:
I bought an extra ($10.00) hand held jig rather than make one as time is not my best friend.
Next I stripped the roller assembly off the holder.

Tommy’s last video hinted that one of the secrets to fine joinery is sharp chisels . . . or as we say in Boston “wicked shaaaahrp”. This video demystifies the secrets of chisel sharpening and clearly shows that a sharp chisel is more important than brand. While there are endless ways to sharpen tools, Tommy has found a process that works best for him. Bottom line . . . do your research, experiment, and find what works best for you . . . get those chisels sharp and start cutting dovetails!
