WoodShow Score and Fun with other LJ's

1605 days ago by jockmike2 | 15 comments »

Had a great time today with Rustic Rick his wife Nancy, Billie J. and his wife Lou Ann, SteveMI, and Myself and my lovely wife Kris. I got a cheaper version of the Gripper from Woodline USA, at $16.00, and a router for my Dremel. Oh man they had some wood to die for, we just had no way to get it home. I’ll have to let the other guys tell you what they got cause I wasn’t paying to much attention. Needless to say I couldn’t find any Lathe tools to speak off. Or any thing else ...

Part 1

1618 days ago by Brad | 3 comments »

So here is my start of the restoration of the Stanley #3 and #4. I picked these up after going to pick up an air filter from a guy on Craigslist and low and behold he had a few planes he didn’t mind selling me for $15 for both. I’m going to try and include some videos on here as well since I know we all love seeing those! My goals are to bring these beauties back to life bright and shinning and creating some paper thin shavings. The blades look decent still and after cleaning w...

Handplane Restoration #26: Interesting middle of the road approach

1694 days ago by WayneC | 6 comments »

While looking for a link to Christopher Schwartz’s blog for my review of his book I noticed his most recent blog entry “Vintage Planes are Better than New” and thought the topic was worth sharing here. In the article, he discusses his purchase of a handplane from Steve Nisbett. Steve is a Machinest that buys old planes and rebuilds them. The planes are then sold from his ebay store. The blog article is a quick read and includes a link to Steve Nisbett’s ebay s...

My Hand Tool Journey #3: Wood Moulding Plane --Set-Up

1699 days ago by Kent Shepherd | 9 comments »

Last time I showed a wooden moulding plane I have. Now I want to share how I tuned it up. Keep in mind, while I am a professional woodworker, I am not a long time experienced plane user. I have seen some guys doing videos that really know their stuff. I have seen other guys do videos that think they know their stuff. I simply want to share what has worked for me in my short career in hand plane use. Since I don’t have a video camera, this will have to do for now. First, I disassemble...

Handplane Restoration #24: Stanley 112

1704 days ago by WayneC | 9 comments »

This was a craigslist item that showed up yesterday evening. I quickly arranged to head over to the sellers house and pick it up. The Stanley 112 is a scraping plane used for finishing surfaces similar to a card scraper. According to Patrick Leach, “this is one of the finest tools ever to have been unleashed on the public from New Britain, Connecticut.” It has been on my shopping list for a while. This one is in pretty good shape. It has some light rust and is missing i...

Hand Tools Odyssey #4: Smoothing Plane Restorations

1715 days ago by gizmodyne | 7 comments »

Our next project in class tune a smoothing plane. We bought a No. 3 Stanley for Kristin at the Swap Meet and I bought a Stanley No. 4C on E-Bay. My plane before tuning. Step 1: Flatten Sole or pay a guy to do itThe sole of the plane before grinding. We set up wet-dry paper on a granite plate and tested the soles. Given the condition of our planes, we decided to take our teacher up on an offer to send the planes to his machinist friend who ground the soles and squared one cheek f...

The workbench #2: Mortising

1716 days ago by dryhter | 0 comments »

The workbench twoI complete the turning of the legs for the workbench and compare minor differences that occurred while turning. While the differences are not obvious to the casual observer and don’t affect the overall project I can’t help but to critique my work. This critiquing is an important step in my learning process. Being self taught for the most part, many times in the past the first step in a project was to just do it, then analyzing what went wrong or right. Having chosen to ...
