Craftsman Dining Room Set #2: Template Adjustment

135 days ago by CaptainSkully | 1 comment »

So, we decided that 72” was a bit overpowering. I yanked the pseudo-top out into the garage and cut a foot off, and then to preserve the Golden Ratio (we just watched a documentary about the Parthenon), cut the width down to 37”. This size is much better, and is more amenable to placing a Limbert Lamp Table or sideboard in the dining area. It seats six comfortably instead of eight, but we’d rather setup another table or TV trays instead of having a monolithic table 24/7. ...

Craftsman Dining Room Set #1: Test Drive

147 days ago by CaptainSkully | 0 comments »

The first installment of this blog is here due to LJ blogging technical issues… To make sure the dimensions are correct for our new table, we decided to do a little test drive. It didn’t hurt that we’re having eight people over for a Fourth of July BBQ. We ran over to the big box store and bought a sheet of particle board for $29. When we got it home, I cut it down to 45” x 72”, the finished dimensions of the table top. After I sanded it and eased the edge...

Dad's Chess Set

534 days ago by dustynewt | 7 comments »

My dad, Ralph Kent, Disney’s keeper of the mouse, passed last year. He was an artist, a designer of uncountable products, a lover of games, a terrible punster, and a collector of mammoth proportion. His chess set collection alone took up an entire spare bedroom. I mean stacked floor to ceiling with squeezeways to access them. He only could display maybe twenty or thirty at a time. They, along with his collections of other games (some dating to the fifteenth century), Disney memorabil...

Turning Chess Pieces #1: Prototypes a work in progress

658 days ago by Chessnut | 4 comments »

These pawns I turned out of various pallet wood, deadfall, offcuts etc, the three on the right are out of african blackwood, once my final design is pleasing unto me I will turn a whole set. Each pawn becomes a little quicker. I turn them all on 3” faceplates but a chuck would be just as good. I didn’t bother to put a finish on most of them. I could probably have a game of chess just on prototypes alone! A work in progress may inspire others to try as well. I swapped out my 1.5...

Tonight, I Finished My Second Custom Steak Knife Set. Is it the Last?

718 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 15 comments »

It’s been a long week, but I am excited to say that I just finished up the 2nd Steak Knife set tonight about 10:15pm CT. Sure, I could go to bed, but not after I blog the milestone. But, first, let me apologize for not providing much in the area of notable, or supportive input the past couple of months. I just haven’t had time to do any reading on LJ, only worrying about getting my own projects and blogs posted. I swore off of LJ until the steak knife commissions were complete,...

First day building the pencil box

747 days ago by Betsy | 4 comments »

Ok – so now I’m on to making the box itself. I’ve not accomplished much today as I’m expecting company and spent a lot of shop time cleaning and preparing a meal. But the slow process is ok I’m really seeing things a little differently being forced to go slowly. It’s also a test of my patience trying to take pictures of the process along the way. For every pic you see here – I’ve probably taken 30 or 40 to get it right. I spoke to Santa last ni...
