I had a LJ send a message about finishing. I thought maybe I’d post the question and answer here and let other LJ’s chime in on what they think or use. Question:I wanted to ask you if you use any kind of sanding sealer on your murphy beds and side cabinets before you spray them with lacquer… My reply:The lacquers that they make now doesn’t need a sanding sealer really. Let me show you why tonight’s shop-time sucked… Sigh… So I had a 2gal bucket of Anchorseal – prized wood end grain sealer for drying logs and planks. I was carrying it to a spot in the shop where I was to seal up a bunch of European olive bottle blanks I resawed and cut up from a large log tonight. Wood IDs #9: Sealing up the mystery tree (probably California Bay Laurel)

You folks helped me to ID this as probably a California Bay Laurel, blown down a pretty strong wind storm a week ago. I’m still going to research it, but for now, it needed to be sealed up against the checking that had already begun. I wanted some good pics of the cross sections before they get their coat of sealer.
