Patchwork Necklace #1: How to make a patchwork necklace

939 days ago by MrsN | 8 comments »

So I sprained my foot last week, and my doctor has told me that I need to keep off it as much as possible and keep it elevated as much as possible. I can still sort of scroll, but I look a little funny with a pillow under my bench resting my foot, so I decided to look though my photos to see if I had anything I could blog about.I ran across some photos of a How-to make a patchwork necklace that I had thought about doing once. So instead of actually building something today, I will teach the w...

Online Scroll Saw Class - Incredibly Fun Adventures in Scroll Sawing #4: Let the Scrolling Begin - Casting on and Casting Off

700 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 69 comments »

Now that everyone has their patterns applied to the wood, we are finally ready to turn on our saws and do some cutting. Since the practice patterns that I have given you have no inside cuts, we are going to learn some practical ways to start and finish our cutting lines. I call this ‘casting on’ and ‘casting off’ the wood. Most people – especially when starting out – just aim for the part of the design that is closest to the edge and start cutting. ...

Online Scroll Saw Class - Incredibly Fun Adventures in Scroll Sawing #6: Cutting Sharp (Acute) Outside Corners

684 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 34 comments »

By now most of you should have a bit of a feel for cutting some nice outside curves on the scroll saw. As we know however, most designs also consist of some nice sharp angles. Making accurate corners can be a bit of a challenge when you are new to scroll sawing, but with a few quick tips and a little bit of practice, you will find it is not as difficult as you may have imagined. Before long you will be scrolling those angles with little effort or thought. In order for me to show you ...

Intarsia Basics #2: Preparing Your Wood and Pattern for Cutting

435 days ago by KoryK | 17 comments »

Intro: Hello to all and welcome to the first installment of Intarsia Basics. Before we can start cutting we need to select the wood we want to use and get our pattern ready. Wood Choices: I prefer to start with stock that is one inch thick because that gives you a lot of depth that you can work with. It will require a little more sanding on some areas but it will help to give your piece a 3D look. It is your choice if you prefer to stain your wood to achieve the colors or use exot...

foot powered Scroll saw #1: foot powered Scroll saw #1:

1435 days ago by Tom8021 | 6 comments »

First off I wanted to do some marquertry but shelling out $400 plus for a slow speed scroll saw was too steep. I tried to find a used one locally, but after a couple of months it wasn’t happening. Then I was going through some old issues of “Woodwork” magazine and found an article on building your own foot powered scroll saw. If you can find it, they are no longer around, it was the October 2006 edition. Anyway the guy who made it was Brian Condran (briancondran@aol.com) and...

Online Scroll Saw Class - Incredibly Fun Adventures in Scroll Sawing #9: Lesson 9 - Cutting Bevels on the Scroll Saw

628 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 18 comments »

Well, you all should have had time to practice cutting all the inside curves and corners on the frames of the practice patterns that I gave you in the previous lessons. Now we should all be ready to move on to learning how to cut on a bevel. One of the reasons that I like the scroll saw so much is because it is a very versatile tool. For a relatively minimal start up cost, you can get a tool that has the ability to make a great variety of projects. For many years, my scroll saw and dril...

Neil Lamens interviews famed marquetuer Silas Kopf

1680 days ago by David | 7 comments »

This entry is a quick heads up regarding another great video interview by Neil Lamens. Neil & Gigi recently went on a road trip to East Hampton, MA to visit the famed marquetuer Silas Kopf. During the video interview, Silas made of a tulip that Neil “wove” in and out of the discussion. Silas took Neil on a shop tour and introduced us right hand and cabinetmaker Tom Coughlin. While discussing a current cabinet in production, Neil and Silas talk about traveling to visit hi...

Constructing "Old 99" #1: Starting the journey.

1759 days ago by MrWoody | 6 comments »

A while ago someone requested a blog on the construction of my toys. I’ll start by warning you that writing composition is not one of my strong suits. Also I build everything from plans even if I have to draw my own. This project was actually started 6 months ago, then other higher priority projects or life got in the way. It is now complete and will be posted once all the blog parts are posted.I’ll try for one a day.TIME: I often get asked “How many hours did it take?”I believe a hobby is so...

A Six-Tube Scroll Saw Blade Holder

1600 days ago by David | 4 comments »

A Six-Tube Scroll Saw Blade Holder This was a quick and fun shop project. The material came from a small 2/4 board of gum cherry that was left over from another project. It took care to wrap the grain with respect to the sides and back. I almost missed this and had a “T-Chisel” event which caused me to re-do part of the project. Well, actually I had no choice, as I know the recipient has a critical eye! This is a six-tube scroll saw blade holder designed for a woodworker tha...
