Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Well, I was asked to put together a blog on how I made my segmentd ring. Since I had to make a new one for myself, (first one too small) I thought I would go ahead and do a step by step picture tutorial. My first time ever doing something like this , so hope it comes out OK.
Here goes;
Wood Selection
The first step in making the ring is deciding what woods to use. As we all know, the selection is quite large. One of the most important things is color, but the most important is hardne...

After being inspired by some beautiful scrollsaw work recently, I thought it was time I did a little practicing at my scroll saw.
The WoodI purchased some 1/4” thick poplar—I didn’t want to use pine because it is so fragile and I didn’t want to use walnut for two reasons: 1) it is too hard and 2) After sacrificing some walnut to make my snowman bottle holder I didn’t think I dare sacrifice some more in order to “practice”.
The ProcessI put tape ...

I want to show my messy workshop. I have too much and too little space. But…I’ll try to give you an idea how it is.

With the success of my scrollsaw stars, I decided to get a little more challenging.
I found this pattern for a “fern box” online and I used some leftover tongue & groove pine that Rick brought home from his work.
Took me 3 hours to complete this stage. oh.. and only 1 scrollsaw blade!! Now THAT’s impressive

Does anyone know how I should go about selling my husband’s tools? I know that they are too heavy to ship and I don’t know of too many woodworkers in this area of northeast Arkansas. How do I price the tools? Can someone give me advice on how to get this accomplished as I am contemplating moving out of state. Thanks for your help.

I thought I would try my hand at writing a blog here. This is a totally different way for me as far as patterns go. I am used to a pattern that is on a sheet of paper the size the object will be when done. and then you make copies and cut out the pieces of the paper pattern and place them on your wood. This pattern came like this. One sheet of paper NOT actual size. Then the pattern itself IS in pieces you need at the size they are suppose to be. When I first started this, a couple days ago, I ...

Two weeks worth of work standing behind the wire brush, shaking and spraying paint, and it is now useable. It’s not completely finished yet, but it is close enough to it.
The only things left to do are repainting the logo plate, finding or making a cap for the pump tube, and remake the model number plate.
I also need to get the right size belt to fit properly (I think I am going with the link belt), but I put one on to make sure it works and it cuts fine.
The motor i...

Well, we got the permit, & finally started building it.
The demolishing of the old porch didn’t take too long,
because it was so poorly constructed, it was hanging by a thread.
They poured the slab over some clay in between the foundation walls,
The clay had settled over time, so there was nothing holding up the slab.
there were two 16” 2×2s just under the threshold, each with about 5 nails in each.
There was nothing holding up the 6 foot length along the...

So I’ve lived in the same two bedroom apartment for ten years now. The second bedroom is my workshop and has a closet that’s been my catch-all for anything that I don’t immediately know what to do with. Needless to say, it’s gotten to be a pretty scary place! A couple of weeks ago, I finally set myself a goal: to take out and sort one box a day until I could see the walls of the closet again…As is usual with such things, the longest journey begins with the first ...
