I took most of the day of today and traveled to Hutchinson, KS to see the exhibits and check on my entries. This was the first time I have had anything entered in the Fair since my old 4-H days, which ended many years ago.

Hey folks, the Wife is in town getting a piece of glass for the top of my knife display box, and so I snuck in from the shop to post an update on the progress for my custom steak knife project. This is the first set of 18 knives. I haven’t started the second set of 12 knives, so it will be a another long couple of weeks to get them finished. Wow, 19 days since I last blogged. What have I been doing? Working has been on the forefront of my mind this past month, with mounting medical bills from the “March from Hell” and prior commitments and deadlines, keeping me busy, but not typing much. I am starting to get a lot of personal emails, and they have been the focus of my computer time lately.

About a month ago I received a phone call asking if I would demonstrate the Art of Scrimshaw at the Senior Center in Marion, KS. The lady that called said that she has held onto a brochure of mine since 2003 that someone had given her then, and so she decided to see if I would come and talk to the group.

I think it is really important to constantly try to learn new things. Could just be my ADHD. But, I’m too old for medications, so I take on new things to learn to keep my mind freed-up from boredom.

Well, after being excited, then not, then excited, then not, and then excited, and then not, for the past 3 weeks, today I was told that a check is in the mail for the deposit money for the Custom Steak Knife sets I will be making.
So, I’m officially at “excited” again.

My recent lumberjock postings of the walking cane work I have done recently has brought a lot of interest from folks wanting me to build them special, unique, elaborately detailed, walking canes and sticks.
This new blog communicates the design process on one cane as I prepare to start the carving, and get approvals on the final design.
The customer is a Youth Pastor, and needs to use a tall walking cane to support a bad knee. He and I have been designing this project for several weeks...

For the past 14 months, I have waited patiently to see if my investment in a prestigious national woodworking show would pay off. Sure it was a lot of fun to be counted acceptable by the jury, and to attend the show, but it is hugely expensive for a small one-man operation like I run here.
