Saws: Restoring, Collecting, Using – My 7 Month Journey It has been seven months since my first post on Lumberjocks. The motivation for that first post was to try to locate a medallion for a $3 British-made handsaw I purchased on eBay. Little did I know at the time what lay ahead for me on the journey of saw restoration and collecting. Photo: My $3 saw that started it all.. Now, with summer coming on and my attention, of necessity, turning more towards catching up on all my outsi...
Shop’s Log: May 5 2014 Having been working on some saw cleanups, modifcations, restorations and refurbs, I was finally ready to tackle a project that has been sitting in the saw till for over a year. Last March, I picked up an 8 inch Disston at an antique shop for a very reasonable amount. I thought at the time all it was going to need was cleaned up and sharpened, but alas, it was not to be. When cleaning up the plate, I found a 1/2in long crack at the toothline. I ha...
I bought my Craftsman table saw about 6 years ago now and it’s been a good saw as long as you took extra special care to ensure the horrid fence it came with was straight each and every time you moved it. The fence system that came in these saw is appalling to say the least and down right garbage when compared to a good biesemeyer style fence. Last week using the saw, I moved the fence and spent several minutes trying to get it straight so I didn’t ruin the beautiful piece of curl...

A while back I bought this saw either from ebay or an auction. Can’t really remember. Anyway, it was in kinda rough shape with a lot of rust. You can almost tell that it says “Spear & Jackson Sheffield” on the spine. This saw has brass split nuts. and a beech handle. I haven’t had the pleasure of unscrewing split nuts until now, so I had to improvise a split nut driver from a 1/2” spade bit. With the saw all apart, it was time to...

Just like many woodworkers out there, I am obsessed with my tools. They perform a function in my shop but they are more than just functional. They provide a sense of pride and aesthetic beauty that only my fellow woodworkers can understand. We spend countless hours mulling over specs. reviews, online videos, pricing, and countless other factors to find that perfect addition to the shop. When we find that perfect hand tool or piece of machinery, we obsess over fine tuning, adding accessori...
Hi! the first project I’d like to share with all yall this year is this bow saw I made. I was given a bow saw kit from Gramercy tools. Knobs, brass blade holders, 3 – 12 ” saw blades. They have the plans for free on their website…. however, like many of us, I can’t just go with someone else’s standard or ordinary set up. So I did a google search for bowsaw, and selected “IMAGES FOR *” and got thousands (well maybe only a hundred or so) of...
