My goal on the Dutch tool chest was to incorporate a space for two larger saws in the design. Like Chris Schwarz’s Dutch tool chests, I was determined to locate the saws on the lid, yet what I didn’t like about his design was that it required ample space on both sides of the tool chest to pull the saws out. I usually don’t have much space on either side. Here’s his design (and notice that you can’t pull that bottom saw out without running it into that workbench o...

I decided to burn through some more of my scrap wood, this time stuff left over from when I built the miter saw/router table station. There was some pretty good sized 1/2” plywood left over cut at odd angles (which was itself scrap from our shelving project).
I have been mulling over what to do with this odd sized (about 2’ x 4’) wood and finally hit on an idea: a saw till.
For a while now, my master plan has been to get the tools that I use regularly (that is, the h...

Hello.
When I left off the chest was built and ready for the tool storage inside. After giving tool storage some thought I decided on having 3 sliding tills, rear moulding plane storage, front saw till, and tool rolls hanging on the front wall. Nothing really new, but I think my tool roll idea is.
When trying to come up with ways to store drill bits and/or chisels on the front wall of my chest I came up with an idea involving canvas tool rolls.
What I have is nails driving into t...

Hello one and all of the woodworking world. Here is my final roundup of ideas, lessons and shavings so I can finally put some of my Disstons in a nice comfy home to showcase and enjoy.
Pic 1: With my chip carvings added I used a counterbore bit I got from my tool chest auction find….awesome find check it out http://lumberjocks.com/jjw5858/blog/29741 then preceeded to brace in the counter holes.
Pic 2-3: To achieve the same drill holes for both sides I simply faced the pieces toget...

Good evening once more friends. Here is another installment of this saw till project build I have been having a fun time experimenting with.
This till has been prepared for the task of holding my various saws for the last week or more….....but I wanted to take some additional time on this and try some creative ideas.
I felt this was a nice opportunity to take aim at showcasing various skills and add them to this project to make it extra special as well as different from the rest.

Hi friends here we are again back in the shop and making and marking up the next to do’s for this saw till project I have been working on. This project is just what is needed for my fast growing collection of handsaws as you will see…..lol.
This is a piece that has brought some more expansion in the learning of joinery, and getting a chance to exercise some new lessons learned.
Pic 1-2: I needed to make a pair 1×2 mortice’s on each side for my rail to joint into t...

Hey friends, hope this weekend is being enjoyed by everyone. Moving on through this project with some learning and shavings I have another installment of where I am on the map with this saw till.
I have watched and kept aware of this cheaper pines cupping and twisting as best as possible. I really wanted this thickness to remain on the boards so I sacrificed planing down in the various directions and trueing it down to smaller than desired width. I actually did at first give it a few sweep...

No really friends all jokes aside….it’s sometimes fun to learn to make do with what we have and try to make lemons from lemonade.

The basic frame for my saw till couldn’t be simpler: four pieces of 10” wide poplar. The bottom is simply screwed into the sides and the top is attached with recessed figure 8s. To support the saws, I created two levels of slotted crossbars. They are mortised into the sides of the carcase. I cut repetitive slots across them to allow me to insert a saw into them. Through trial and error I decided that having a slot every two inches gave me just enough room to store the saws an...

As my hand-tool usage has grown, I have gradually expanded my collection of saws. I started with three (rip, crosscut, and back) and over time I’ve added other restored specialty saws until I have no place to put them all. At that point I realized I had to build a saw till.
My workshop is in a shared basement of a multi-apartment building. While normally the other residents of my building are quite nice and respectfully don’t mess with my stuff (I don’t mess with their...
