Stickley Dining Table no. 622 #4: The Inspector! Plus World's Most Boring Woodworking Video

Which Wax?I bought a new kind of wax by Howards based on a recommendation from a friend. It is called Walnut. I compared it to the Briwax (Dark Brown) which I have have used previously. The Briwax is much darker. The Howards smells like citrus and claims to provide u.v. protection. It does seem a little more gritty, but applies smoothly. Here is a shot with one base assembly (right) finished with the wax. The other is not (left) Booooooooooring. After finishing the base and the under...

Being Freed Up. Seeing wood and woodworking in a new light.

593 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 18 comments »

Ok, I promised myself and my wife that I would quit typing so much and work in the shop more. So, I’ve been fairly quiet, only admiring all of the growth of LJ, and the projects and blogs a few times a day quietly. This growing bunch of folks has been truly inspirational for me. But, when I type too much, I don’t make things, bills come in the mailbox, upset spouse, thus the silence. After all, what I have to say isn’t all that important anyway. Something else my wife t...

377 days ago by Eric | 6 comments »

On Saturday (the day after our baby was due, and he’s still not here!), my wonderful wife said, “Why don’t you go do some woodworking?” Since I was actually in the mood to tackle the next task on my Lego Table, I went for it! My Workbench #2: Questions About the Top

655 days ago by Eric | 3 comments »

I have to say, the thought of trying to flatten 16(ish) boards entirely by hand (for the bench top) is a bit daunting. It’ll be an artistic bench with the “bent” look. ;^) But I do have a couple questions for you all, and I know that at least a few of you won’t disapp...

Ugly Sapwood Question

642 days ago by Eric | 8 comments »

I posted this over in the forums yesterday, but it’s only gotten one reply (appreciate the guess, Scott!) so I thought I’d try again over here on my blog. Take a look at this piece of kempas sapwood (click for larger image): What’s up with that ugly streaking? Do you think it’s just the board, or could it be something that is typicall of all kempas sapwood? Even though I only need thin strips of it for my dovetail box, I’m wondering if even that is possible.
