Vintage Seigh for Christmas

1974 days ago by Karson | 12 comments »

I had seen this vintage sleigh in Wood magazine some time ago and I had to go searching to find it again. It was in December 1997, Issue 101 I believe that I’ve seen it somewhere else but I didn’t want to buy the article without searching further. One of the new officers at the Woodworking Club thought he might have it. He did and he brought the magazine to me and i scanned it and created a pdf for future use and to keep from cutting up his magazine. The sleigh was found at ...

Visit to KenCraft Company

2002 days ago by Greg Wurst | 5 comments »

I had a day off and decided to head up to Toledo to get some red oak at KenCraft Company (www.kencraftcompany.com). I had asked about shipping it to me south of Dayton and shipping would be about $80. So, I decided to just make the trip and see what they had. An excellent selection and very good prices. I picked-up 50BF or Red Oak, a couple nice pieces of Sapele for a full-length mirror for the inlaws, and a $5 box of random scraps that are great for small projects. Worth the trip and I&...

Sweet Chest of Drawers Build #3: The frame and panel sides

505 days ago by Kyle | 3 comments »

My Dad came and visited me back in June and he helped me get started on this. I bought the porter cable router 7518 and a nice big raised panel bit to go with it. I thought I would start by building the panel first and then the frame around it. The reason I did it this way was because I didn’t want to go and buy more and more wood without using what I had so I took two of my more wider boards, cut them in half lengthwise, and edge jointed them to make two panels. I don’t have any ...

Acoustic Guitar #2: The back and ribs.

563 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 10 comments »

For this, my first effort, (that suggests there’ll be at least a second!) I’m using some pieces of sapele that have been lying around for some time. Bending iron by Heath Robinson or Rube Goldberg! To Part Three

Sapele side table progress

1944 days ago by Greg3G | 15 comments »

Ok…I was thinking of doing some stringing or inlays on this but after talking with my wife about where we wanted to put this, I let that idea go. I wanted to keep it a bit less formal. This series of photos are after the glue up and with one coat of Karson’s Oil/Poly blend recipe. It is still just a bit on the damp side. The top is not attached at this point. I will probably give it one more coat of the oil/poly blend then give it 3 or 4 coats of shellac and rub it out. I want ...

Sweet Chest of Drawers Build #4: Joining the sides on the top

504 days ago by Kyle | 3 comments »

I don’t know if it’s a mistake or not to do it this way but, I decided to join the sides together just like I did on the sides themselves. I’m not sure this will create any kind of ultimate weakness or not but, there was enough stock in the legs to do dovetails for both of the rails.....Here’s the first cut. Tail first….......These look pretty good to me........Now to chop out some the housing for the dovetail….......chop chop chop…........Very snug f...

My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #89: Back to the Shop!

1326 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 10 comments »

Sometimes I am just like a child. I guess that age has nothing to do with maturity, does it? Here I was yesterday, doing what I was supposed to be doing (drawing) and my partner called that he got off of work early. By early, I mean it was about 2pm. He asked if I wanted to head to Bernie’s and re-saw that wood we got on Friday (I guess he is a child, too!) and it took me about half a second to answer YES! I have been thinking about all those beautiful wood pieces since we got ba...

Clipboard #1: WHERE'S ME CLIPBOARD!

1297 days ago by BritBoxmaker | 28 comments »

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before I do a fairly mundane day job, stacking shelves. One of the main tools for this is a clipboard, to hold my picklist. It invariably goes missing. Either I leave it in a trolley somewhere or, worse still, somebody ‘borrows’ it without asking. Hence the cry ‘Where’s me clipboard!’. The use of ‘me’ instead of ‘my’ is a dialect feature of East London and Estuary English which, along with commeritis,...

Celtic NOT - a journey

848 days ago by BritBoxmaker | 19 comments »

This is the blog of how I built Celtic NOT. The design is one of a recent series of overlapping circle designs. Originally there were two possible patterns These are the original paper models. As you can see the more complicated of the two had an interwoven line on the sides of the box as well. I eventually decided this pattern looked a bit too busy and opted for the simpler of the two. The box was going to be Oak with Sycamore and Walnut stringing. I initially tried making t...

Savannah's Horse Barn for Christmas

1948 days ago by Karson | 17 comments »

My youngest daughter was very much into horses when she was at home. We had 14 Acres in New Jersey and probably had horses for around 15 years or so. After High School was over the horses disappeared and the horse barn became a lumber storeroom. She got married and about 6 month ago her in-laws gave her some riding lessons as a birthday gift. The horse fever caught on again. This time she has a young daughter. For some reason girls and horses seem to go together. Missy sometimes takes S...
