Springfield MA WoodWorking Show

1642 days ago by dustbunny | 10 comments »

I went to the show today and wasn’t disappointed. It was a small show this year probably because the show was running simultaneously with the Baltimore show that Karson blogged about yesterday. So I think some of the vendors chose Baltimore. Even still there was enough to look at and vendors to talk with. There were several router accessories vendors the two that were most impressive-1. Prazi ChestMate which is a nice setup because you can adjust the spaces between your joints and it...

Router Table #8: Insert an Insert an Insert an Insert an....

1642 days ago by PurpLev | 15 comments »

OK. I caved in and bought an Incra Insert for the router table after they posted it back in stock. It’s the 3/8” phenolic plate that is their ‘old’ design. the opening for the router is 3 3/8” as opposed to the new Aluminum plate which are 3 5/8”. also it’s not as mechanical capable as the aluminum plates, but for $35 it’s within my budget. and still a very good plate. what I really like about the Incras is their MagnaLock plate inserts which sn...

Bought my router combo kit

1643 days ago by David Craig | 3 comments »

Interesting how you can spend a hundred hours leafing through magazine and online articles and reviews, agonizing over a decision and then when you finally made up your mind and feel fully prepared, you find yourself almost back to square one when you stand in the tool aisle :) I decided on a router combo set, the Ridgid R2930 with a 2 1/4 HP 12 amp motor with 1/2 and 1/4 collet assemblies. I read a review in Wood Magazine stacking up the competition and out of 12 routers, it was one of fo...

A Tale of 3 Routers

1644 days ago by David Craig | 13 comments »

Today is payday and I have put off new tool purchases over the holidays so that there was room in the budget for a decent Christmas for the kids and so dad is going to pick up a router, one he probably should have picked up in the first place :) Two years ago, a friend takes me to Harbor Freight and I see a 1 3/4 HP plunge router ON SALE (took me a bit to realize that these things are ALWAYS on sale) for about 40 dollars. Impulse buy later and I am playing around with the router down the ...

Office printer cupboard #2: Small bits of progress at last

1645 days ago by timrowledge | 0 comments »

The top and sides were glued up and trimmed a couple of days ago and today I was able to cut the dados and sliding dovetail slots. Of course, I screwed up one of the (supposedly stopped) dados and will need to insert a little block for the, err, stop. I had almost forgotten how much mess routing a dado can make. I made the drawers to a variation of the intended design after discovering that even the slightest deviation between the holes for the shelving wires and the actual wires was enoug...

Random idea for a shop built rail-guided saw and router

1646 days ago by Jeison | 2 comments »

Ok bear with me here, I just had this idea and I’m trying to crystalize it while I type (and its too cold in the shop to experiment)...Ok first of all, one of the first things I made for myself when I started woodworking was a set of straightedge guides for my circular saw and router. A wide chunk of 3/4” MDF with a MDF fence glued on top, and trimmed the edges to get a nice straight guide. Well, in hindsight that was a bad idea, for one thing the motor for my skilsaw rides abov...

Router Table #7: Drawers Under the Weather

1649 days ago by PurpLev | 13 comments »

and I mean literally – we’ve had a snow storm here, and the garage is covered with more than a foot of snow. It was blazing outside and the high winds were blowing snow all over the place. my garage is unheated, but neither of those stopped me from making the most I could with an open window of time I got this weekend. I caved in, and ordered an Incra router plate for the top when they just posted the phenolic version on sale for $35 (they had a 10% off last week). I really ...

Dovetail Pen Turning #2: Attempt one - Failure but learning opportunity

1653 days ago by SNSpencer | 2 comments »

Finished up the first set of pen tubes for the Dovetail Pen endevor. Not worthy of a finished pen and now I will need to get a pen disassembly kit to salvage the parts. Oh well, I need one anyway. Problem: Since I don’t currently have a blank drilling jig the center holes were not perfectly inline with the line of the dovetail joint. This leads to pattern allignment issues on the finished pen.Solution: Looks like I will invest in a pen blank drilling jig or make one. (I need on...

Pet Peeve - 1

1653 days ago by richgreer | 16 comments »

Whenever you buy a router, table saw, lathe and some other tools, it is common to get one or more wrenches for changing bits, blades, chucks, ... These tend to be some of the cheapest most poorly made wrenches I have ever seen. The wrenches that came with my lathe literally spread further open when I applied moderate pressure, making them completely worthless. I had to spend over an hour with a Dremel grinder to correct problems with the wrench that removes my arbor nut on my table s...
