starting my kitchen cabinets

1828 days ago by woodchic | 78 comments »

Hi everybody…....My husband finally got the floor finished…...he did a fantastic job I might add and now…..I finally sucked up enough courage to get started on my kitchen cabinets. The kitchen and dining area is 14 ft wide x 24.6 ft long. My cabinets are made of plywood and my face frames and doors are made out of hickory. I have never worked on a set of kitchen cabinets before, so I am pretty much learning this on my own. I have a friend on here that gives me advice whe...

The Stumpy Nubs Workshop #1: FINALLY- The first episode is done! You're gonna LOVE IT!

1021 days ago by StumpyNubs | 63 comments »

Maybe “LOVE” is a strong word. But I’m really excited about the final version of the show, and I think most people will feel the same way. Forget about everything we experimented with before. This is all new. It’s been over a year in development, and And I’d like to think it is a pretty unique format! Here’s how it works… The show is designed to have the feel of a single camera “reality” type show. It is meant to be a glimpse into our workshop as if you were just stopping in...

Wall Hung Tool Cabinet #21: Hinges and Hardware - Cabinet Complete

579 days ago by Smitty_Cabinetshop | 59 comments »

When we left subject cabinet, the last part of the build was done, as the upper door pieces were cut and fit and glued up. Stiles ran long on the doors, as Lysdexic correctly pointed out, to prevent spitting of the entire stile while the mortises were cut. So we know the doors needed a trim length wise. What I didn’t realize is how close I had made it re: the rails. You can see in the pics below I had to preserve all of the rail material… Whew… There was ve...

Workbench #9: Making Wooden Screws

1056 days ago by CartersWhittling | 57 comments »

Hello. This is a video showing the process I go through to make wooden screws. I briefly try to explain how it is set up and show the jig making the screw. I will soon have a video on making wooden nuts aswell. I will eventually make a video showing how to make the tap and screw making jig and explain how to create the size of screw you want. I’m sure there are many other ways to make nuts and screws but this is how I do it and it works fairly well, the main downside being that I can ge...

Router Table #1: Design ideas, need some feedback

2017 days ago by PurpLev | 43 comments »

OK, so yeah – another blog about a router table, but since I’m going to make one , might as well document it while I go, maybe someone can benefit from this. I’ve had a Rockler router table top + plate + fence which I got when I bought my router (Bosch 2 1/4hp). It had the misfurtune of being on the floor when my basement was flooded a couple of years ago, so that top was ruined. I since have been planning to replace it with a shop-built version, and make a full enclosed ...

Toot, Toot, Tootorial #3: How to make a whistle on a router table

1541 days ago by Mary Anne | 38 comments »

Sorry about the delay in posting this tutorial of the series. I ran into some technical difficulties… which is another way of saying I sometimes have the attention span of a gnat and messed things up the first time around. Speaking of messing things up, I’ve injured my knee and have to stay off my feet for a few days. I am only on day two and already going crazy. All in all, it looks a good time for going on with this toot toot tootorial series. —...

How to find and harvest legal burls!

1780 days ago by OregonBurls | 37 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Not Just Any Box #2: It all hinges on these..

2415 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 35 comments »

I have a love affair with wooden hinges and this challenge gave me the opportunity to go one step further with them. (It started some years ago when I came across the work of the late Tim Stead – in my opinion, a genius.) Accurately drilling the hinge pin hole in such a hinge is never easy, and those I planned for this box are 9.5” long and therefore impossible to drill. The following is an attempt to show how I overcame this bit of the challenge. The first shot shows the oak blan...
