Turning #4: It was a rough September

13 days ago by Brian Havens | 4 comments »

So I have not made an entry to my turning series blog for some time, and there was about a month and a half that I had no activity at all on LJ’s. People began to wonder and query as to what I was up to…. Actually, that last part is not true, but it sounded good. ;-) I spend the greater part of September roughing out a few bowl blanks, just a few… well, almost a whole tree. I had the fortune of getting a rather large, freshly felled pear tree in August. My o...

Holtzapffel Bench #2: A Lumber Jock Meets Lumber Jack

364 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 6 comments »

Last weekend I made my first trip to a local lumber yard for the Holtzapffel bench project. After much deliberation, I had made a firm decision on White Ash as my choice of wood. I’ve not been to many lumber yards, and I’ve never gone to pick out my own rough-cut slices before, so this was quite exciting for me. In my haste, I planned poorly for the hauling of big, heavy woods and had to rent a Home Depot truck for the duration. I drive a Mazda3 which, while Zoom-Zoom and util...

Turning #2: More Rough Bowls and Blanks

375 days ago by Dorje | 10 comments »

Did some turning today…processed a number of maple rounds into bowl blanks…waxed the ends on the blanks and turned a few rough bowls with a few others. This clunker has some pretty good figure – and some rot too! Not sure what I’m going to do about the rot..I think I need to fill it with something (not the void – but the punky wood). I recall that Douglas posted something on the subject. I’ll have to track that down. Some of the blanks had figure a...

Turning #1: Rough Bowls

383 days ago by Dorje | 18 comments »

Here are a few of the ROUGH bowls that have come off the lathe in the past few weeks (sorry about the lighting): A small cherry bowl: A slightly large, chunkier, and deeper cherry bowl: I nabbed a number of chunks of the neighbor’s maple that he was going to haul off. I tried to get ones with promise of figure. Here’s one that I turned the other day – and don’t I wish the whole blank had that curly figure!:

The Craftsman's Path #9: The benefits of rough lumber for design and building

416 days ago by Mark Mazzo | 3 comments »

I was out this weekend at a friend’s place where some logging is being done (I’ll be posting about that in the near future). I started to think about the process of gathering lumber for use in the design and building of furniture projects. The work being done at my friends was very small scale when compared to any kind of a commercial operation however, it made me think about the benefits that small operations like this offer to the average woodworker. I buy rough lumber fr...

Outdoor "Coffee" Table #5: A little time'll get ya...

485 days ago by Dorje | 16 comments »

Be forewarned: What follows is not the most interesting content, but I’m just trying to document the steps of this process… I had an ounce of time yesterday afternoon (less than an hour) so I cut up the stock to rough dimensions. I was nervous about this after finding out just how hard Jatoba really is. Very hard wood. Wasn’t sure me little Crapsman (cast iron top contractors saw w/ belt driven 1hp motor) was gonna do the trick, but boy am I proud of it! The pieces w...
